Default Showtime's "Escape at Dannemora" (Benicio Del Toro/Patricia Arquette)

Quote:

Showtime is lining up a trio of big stars for a true-crime drama.

The network is teaming with Ben Stiller for Escape at Clinton Correctional, a limited series based on the 2015 prison escape in upstate New York. Sources say Stiller is attached to direct all eight episodes of the project, in which Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette are currently in negotiations to star.

The series will tell the real-life story of Richard Matt and David Sweat, two inmates who were discovered missing at the maximum security Clinton Correction Facility in New York after being aided in their escape by a married female prison employee with whom they both became sexually entangled.

Del Toro will play Matt, while Arquette will portray Tilly Mitchell, who supervises the prison tailor shop. Sweat's casting is expected to be announced shortly.

Escape at Clinton Correctional will be written and executive produced by Mad Men's Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin (The Player), who met while working as writers on Showtime's Ray Donovan. Johnson and Tolkin will also executive produce alongside Bryan Zuriff (Steve Jobs), Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey) via Michael De Luca Productions and Nicky Weinstock for Stiller's Red Hour Productions.

Wow, this is the thread about this show?!

It was on my radar but after a coworker was praising it to me the last couple of weeks, I decided to finally check it out. Three episodes in and I think it's great.

Del Toro is being Del Toro, and it's great. Fantastic directing from Ben Stiller as well.

One of the best shows I watched last year, and probably the best work that Ben Stiller has ever done.

Just finished fifth hour. Some strong Steadicam operating here.

Interesting longform format and remarkable how this presentation--of what we used to more commonly call a miniseries--has become so much more commonplace in today's television.

Arquette's (much deserved) awards buzz brought this project to my attention that I almost surely would have otherwise missed until years later. But there are a couple of other perfs here that deserve mention/attention. Eric Lange's portrayal of Arquette's character's husband Lyle. Gotta go back and grip Narcos and Lost to see him there. And I've never seen Paul Dano quite like this before.

I've seen George Drakoulias' name on many films but his music supervisor contributions here make this my fave thing he's done since co-producing Tom Petty's The Last DJ.

Very unlikely in this market but I'd sure love to see a BD with commentary from Stiller and perhaps one of the credited research consultants for BDT. There's so much that seems implausible about the prisoner/prisoner and prisoner/prison employee interaction. Did Gene Palmer (the David Morse prison guard character) really have that much personal interaction with Richard Matt (BDT's character) . . . because Palmer liked giving Matt's paintings to Palmer's wife? Matt and Sweat pass a helluva lot stuff between the two of them--is that realistic? Matt is shown having sex with Tilly in that back room at one point with the dang door open. Did it really, ahem, go down like that?

Maybe I've watched too many prison pictures depicting "super max" facilities. But that's one of my only issues with this show at this point. Excellent.

The sex seems to possibly be the most exaggerated thing in the show, but from what I read up on, most of it generally happened. Which in itself is crazy.

Mazel tov to Ben, who tonight won in the "Movies Made For Television & Limited Series" category for Dannemora at the DGA Awards. Fellow nominees included no less than Barry Levinson.

Default Still no BR release?? Arggh.

If anyone has seen the Prime or iTunes download versions (as opposed to streaming), can you let me know how the quality is?

This is a show that deserves the best quality and it's so sad to see the shite banding and artifacts on the cable version.

9.5/10 as far as mini/maxi-series go

*don't know how I missed this but when I saw Paul Dano and BD I knew it had to be quality.
