This appears to still be holding it's ground on the May 8th theatrical release, according to the official website and Box Office Mojo, even though we all know that isn't going to happen.
I wonder if Focus'll send it to streaming like Emma and Never Rarely Sometimes Always? |

EDIT: Just checked the Focus website, looks like they pulled off the May date for Irresistible. Last edited by prkprkprk; 04-22-2020 at 05:10 AM. |

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_high_note Overall: It's 4 movies crammed into one and loses its balance but Tracee Ellis Ross & Dakota Johnson make for a winning pair and the film is that cheesy fluff we like every now and then. |

4.5/5
No surprise here whatsoever, I absolutely LOVED this. I can’t give it a completely perfect score because the reviews on this are correct about one thing. This really is trying to be 5 different films at once, so the first 45 minutes or so is crammed with A LOT of story building that they feel like they’re trying to balance everything perfectly. By the halfway mark though, everything settles and it slides to a great finish. The film is syrupy sweet and cheesy but that’s why it’s good. It’s the perfect type of feel good film we need. This all lands on the shoulders of Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson, whose chemistry is insane. Watching these two bounce off each other filled me with perpetual joy and put a smile on my face. Dakota has that deadpan delivery that actors rarely can pull off, she does, and Tracee Ellis Ross has that big diva personality with that bossy delivery and it all just works. The characters work together so well because, for the first half of the film, Maggie proves she has such a lifelong respect for Grace and by the end, Grace’s respect for Maggie shines through. I hated Ice Cube, and that’s a good thing, because he plays a misogynistic, controlling ******* in Grace’s manager. June Diane Raphael is an added comedic benefit as Grace’s house manager and has a few great moments with Maggie. The film itself is really smart. Most films about a certain industry just expect you to know something or don’t bother telling you anything at all. This film takes its time to teach the viewer about music production and music management. I appreciated that part. There is one fairly obvious “plot twist” coming straight out of a Hallmark film, you see it a mile away, and I sat there the entire time DREADING the reveal but instead they twist it on your head and make it a nonchalant, “duh” comedic moment. I really loved that too. Last edited by Britnasty; 05-30-2020 at 05:07 PM. |
