Universal Studios The High Note (2020) - May 8, 2020

Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross Co-Starring in Comedy ‘Covers’
Quote:
Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross will co-star in “Covers,” a comedy set in the music scene in Hollywood.

“Late Night” director Nisha Ganatra is helming from a screenplay by Flora Greeson. Focus Features is partnering with Working Title Films on the movie. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce with Alexandra Loewy as executive producer. Focus Features will distribute the film in the U.S., and Universal Pictures International will distribute overseas.

Johnson starred as Anastasia Steele in Universal’s “Fifty Shades” franchise. She’s a repeat collaborator of Luca Guadagnino, having appeared in his films “Suspiria” and “A Bigger Splash.” She’ll next be seen starring in “The Peanut Butter Falcon.”

Ross is best known for her role as Dr. Rainbow Johnson on the series “Black-ish” and playing Joan Clayton on the long-running series “Girlfriends.”

“Together Dakota and Tracee are an undeniable force of comedic talent, and along with our friends at Working Title and our director Nisha, we can’t wait to see them go head to head on this new project,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski.

Johnson is represented by WME, Lighthouse Management and Media, and Ziffren Brittenham. Ross is represented by UTA, Artists First, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller. Ganatra is represented by ICM and Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner & Gellman.

This appears to still be holding it's ground on the May 8th theatrical release, according to the official website and Box Office Mojo, even though we all know that isn't going to happen.

I wonder if Focus'll send it to streaming like Emma and Never Rarely Sometimes Always?

They still have Irresistible for May, Kajillionaire in June, and Come Play in July as well. I would bet they’ll do either a massive release date shift or VoD announcements all at once pretty soon.

EDIT: Just checked the Focus website, looks like they pulled off the May date for Irresistible.

This would have been perfect for Mother's Day, but I don't blame them for pushing the date back considering they haven't been promoting it.

Yup! Take my money now!

I’ll continue to hope it’s purchase versus rental but since it’s Focus/Uni, ugh.

Movies with music elements are always better in the theatre because not all of us can have elaborate sound systems at home.

I wish this would have stayed in theatres.

Overall: It's 4 movies crammed into one and loses its balance but Tracee Ellis Ross & Dakota Johnson make for a winning pair and the film is that cheesy fluff we like every now and then.

4.5/5

No surprise here whatsoever, I absolutely LOVED this. I can’t give it a completely perfect score because the reviews on this are correct about one thing. This really is trying to be 5 different films at once, so the first 45 minutes or so is crammed with A LOT of story building that they feel like they’re trying to balance everything perfectly. By the halfway mark though, everything settles and it slides to a great finish.

The film is syrupy sweet and cheesy but that’s why it’s good. It’s the perfect type of feel good film we need. This all lands on the shoulders of Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson, whose chemistry is insane. Watching these two bounce off each other filled me with perpetual joy and put a smile on my face. Dakota has that deadpan delivery that actors rarely can pull off, she does, and Tracee Ellis Ross has that big diva personality with that bossy delivery and it all just works. The characters work together so well because, for the first half of the film, Maggie proves she has such a lifelong respect for Grace and by the end, Grace’s respect for Maggie shines through.

I hated Ice Cube, and that’s a good thing, because he plays a misogynistic, controlling ******* in Grace’s manager. June Diane Raphael is an added comedic benefit as Grace’s house manager and has a few great moments with Maggie.

The film itself is really smart. Most films about a certain industry just expect you to know something or don’t bother telling you anything at all. This film takes its time to teach the viewer about music production and music management. I appreciated that part.

There is one fairly obvious “plot twist” coming straight out of a Hallmark film, you see it a mile away, and I sat there the entire time DREADING the reveal but instead they twist it on your head and make it a nonchalant, “duh” comedic moment. I really loved that too.
