No English subtitles I'm guessing?

I've been waiting for a 4K of this for ages, as I 've heard the Criterion isn't the best image quality - a disc which I've nearly purchased about 23 times but have been put off by reports. Is it that bad?

Yes. Criterion was involved in the restoration, so expect a 4K from them soon as well.

If it's this year, I would guess November, being a historically big month for them. They originally released the BD in Nov. 2017 too.

Even though it's not my favorite Melville, I'll gladly buy it if Criterion (or any English-language label) releases it.

I'm not sure how Pathé would like that, although maybe they both feel that putting a release out at the same time would minimize importing. That Pathé edition is expensive, though and I wouldn't be surprised if French fans could save €30 or more importing if the Criterion is already out or coming soon.

It is a joint effort between Pathé and Criterion though, similar to when Criterion partnered with Studiocanal for Mulholland Drive, and the 4K for those came out relatively close to one another. I also have to wonder how much overlap there would be between those buying the Pathé release, without English subtitles, and those wanting the English-friendly Criterion release. I can't imagine there are many who would opt for the Pathé over the Criterion, even if they were released on the same day. That also means that Criterion likely wouldn't be worried about losing sales to the Pathé release, meaning they could save it for the next year, or however long into the future. But I hope they don't, and actually do announce it for November.

I watched le cercle rouge first and thought it was amazing. Watching this now seems boring somehow. Maybe I was just too tired to concentrate and get into it...ended up going to sleep. I'll try again and give it a fair chance though

I absolutely love the mood of this film. It has this somber melancholy about it that always draws me in. It's one of Melville's best.

Hope Criterion announces a 4K this year.

It's just too bad Criterion also have the rights for the UK, where they refuse to release anything on UHD. Meaning I will have to import this one from the US, which is a bit more expensive, but this film is worth it!

Restoration trailer. Doesn't look like they really mucked with the colors much thankfully

Samourai is quite slow, but that's it's stylistic appeal. John Woo's favorite film. Think of it as style over substance and it's actually quite incredible. There's a scene where Delon puts on his hat that took over 4 hours to shoot due to continual retakes.

Looks inline with the Cercle Rouge color grade, which to me looked fantastic so I'm looking forward to this.

Since Criterion was involved in the restoration I would expect the colors to be correct. They have encoding issues but they are usually fine when it comes to restorations.

An essential film. Top three Melville, along with Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge. Excited for the upgrade on this one.
