Special Message to WB:

The laserdisk version of The Cincinatti Kid (and I believe the VHS) had a downbeat ending which I think was the original USA cut. But the DVD release had a different "feel good" ending scene added on. My understanding is the studio convinced Norman Jewison (director) to allow this ending for DVD.

I really hope we get the original downbeat ending on BD and if you want the feel good ending version on BD, PLEASE at least include both options on the disk.

PLEASSSSEEEEE.....

Hmm just checked the director's commentary on the DVD.

Jewison doesn't clarify which ending got screened in the USA at cinemas. But he does say the happier ending was "tacked on to the end of the picture because of the insistence of the producer and MGM."

In the DVD commentary he is surprised at the end because he thought the DVD was his preferred downbeat ending (as was the laserdisk, VHS and most TV screenings, at least up until recently), and actually apologises to the viewer that it is the different version to his preferred version.

So again, please WB, at least include both cuts (it's just a different scene at the end and would surely cost next to nothing to do). And it will be great for marketing because you can market it as "including the director's cut"...

I never knew there was a second ending to this movie. The again I only seen it once a very long time ago when I was 11 or 12 years old. The ending as always stuck with me, I think it made the movie what it is. I don't see why they would have to go with a happy ending.

Yeah it was a brilliant ending and it stuck with me too. The new ending on the other hand feels very forgettable.

Here is an exact comparison I wrote up a few years ago when I first watched the DVD. Be warned it tells both alternative endings...

[Show spoiler]
We all know the ending in the DVD version - Cincinatti leaves building after losing card game, is sitting despondently against wall, young boy approaches him to throw coins, young boy wins, says "You're trying to hard man, you just aint ready for me yet," and runs off to the RIGHT of screen, Cincinatti looks in that direction with slightly ironic/surprised look in eyes, and begins walking, meets girlfriend around corner, she hugs him, music plays dramatic DADA DADA DADA DADA tune and CUT to end titles.

Here is how the Laser Disk/VHS version differs:

Cincinatti leaves building after losing card game, is sitting despondently against wall, young boy approaches him to throw coins, young boy wins. From the moment Cincinnati's coin hits the ground next to the boys coin we get a different cut. The dialogue is the same but it is a different cut. Unlike on the DVD, as the boy runs to pick up his money, on the Laser Disk version he looks up at Cincinnati with a happily surprised look on his face (that isn't on the DVD), then we get the same dialogue - "You're trying to hard man, you just aint ready for me yet," but this time the boy runs off to the LEFT of screen, and the camera moves in for a CLOSE UP of Cincinatti's face (which it didn't do on the DVD version) as he looks in that direction with a slightly ironic (I think deeper more thoughful expression than on the DVD version) look in his eyes, at which moment we get the dramatic DADA DADA DADA DADA tune and CUT to end titles.

I'll leave it up to your imagination to see how this creates quite a different "effect" emotionally for the viewer.

The ending on the DVD is not as good IMO. I hope we have both endings on Blu ray.

Hello from Brasil,

I'm so confused about languages and subtitles for this release.
In review shows this title have portuguese language and subtitles, but in back sleeve doesn't have.
One of you have a blu-ray copy to say if is true?
I hope you understand me, my english is not so good.
Thanks anyway

Marcelo

Covers often don't list all of the languages that are on the disc. Most reviewers check the Blu-ray for the languages that are present, so the review will probably be correct.

I do not understand the relative "popularity" of this film (36%) compared to Bullitt. I love this film! (I love both). This one has great eye candy, with the New Orleans setting, Ann Margaret, and the pressure cooker scenes at the table with Edward G. Robinson.

One of my favorite Steve McQueen flicks, and that's saying something.

Interested in adding this to my collection but can anyone confirm what ending is on the blu-ray, the happy ending or the downbeat ending?

Aparantly the VHS and DVD releases of the film all contained the happy ending.
