Special Message to WB:
The laserdisk version of The Cincinatti Kid (and I believe the VHS) had a downbeat ending which I think was the original USA cut. But the DVD release had a different "feel good" ending scene added on. My understanding is the studio convinced Norman Jewison (director) to allow this ending for DVD. I really hope we get the original downbeat ending on BD and if you want the feel good ending version on BD, PLEASE at least include both options on the disk. PLEASSSSEEEEE..... |

Hmm just checked the director's commentary on the DVD.
Jewison doesn't clarify which ending got screened in the USA at cinemas. But he does say the happier ending was "tacked on to the end of the picture because of the insistence of the producer and MGM." In the DVD commentary he is surprised at the end because he thought the DVD was his preferred downbeat ending (as was the laserdisk, VHS and most TV screenings, at least up until recently), and actually apologises to the viewer that it is the different version to his preferred version. So again, please WB, at least include both cuts (it's just a different scene at the end and would surely cost next to nothing to do). And it will be great for marketing because you can market it as "including the director's cut"... |

I never knew there was a second ending to this movie. The again I only seen it once a very long time ago when I was 11 or 12 years old. The ending as always stuck with me, I think it made the movie what it is. I don't see why they would have to go with a happy ending.

Here is an exact comparison I wrote up a few years ago when I first watched the DVD. Be warned it tells both alternative endings... [Show spoiler]

Hello from Brasil,
I'm so confused about languages and subtitles for this release. In review shows this title have portuguese language and subtitles, but in back sleeve doesn't have. One of you have a blu-ray copy to say if is true? I hope you understand me, my english is not so good. Thanks anyway Marcelo |

I do not understand the relative "popularity" of this film (36%) compared to Bullitt. I love this film! (I love both). This one has great eye candy, with the New Orleans setting, Ann Margaret, and the pressure cooker scenes at the table with Edward G. Robinson.
One of my favorite Steve McQueen flicks, and that's saying something. |

Aparantly the VHS and DVD releases of the film all contained the happy ending. |
