I don't spin discs, I just rip them which gives me many benefits including the ability to modify subtitles.

that could be a good option but seems like too much work for me, particularly if Im going to spend 30 euros plus shipping.

ITs annoying for me how much I like french cinema but how little they care for non french speakers. They have great movies and stars but its like they dont want to share them with the rest of the world

One of my favorite movies. If it doesn't have subtitles I'll create them.

Hmm, looks like the subtitles are burned in.

Subs seem burned in only as far as the DVD is concerned. The (bad) translation from Capelight’s site reads:
Language / Sound: German HD-DTS MA 5.1, French HD-DTS MA 5.0, German DD 5.1, French DD 2.0
Aspect ratio: 1.85:1 (4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+), 1.85:1 (1080p), 1.78:1 (16:9)
Subtitles: German (DVD: UT not hideable)
Running time: 159 minutes

I saw that and figured DVD meant UHD since I didn't think anyone would include a DVD but lo and behold, they are including a DVD.

So that's promising news, thank you!

Am I understanding this correct that the 4K is much brighter or have I got it reversed?

Watched it last night. Thought it looked gorgeous. The sum of fine detail that is now apparent is remarkable, like in the opening wedding for example (costumes, faces of extras in the bleachers in the background etc). Lots of deep shadows and chiaroscuros; didn’t look over brighten to me… Looks excellent in motion. Had this in VHS, DVD and blu, and I know it’s a cliche, but often felt like I was seeing it for the first time.

Excellent news. I never had it in VHS (I was a laserdisc person back then) but did get it on DVD and Bluray so I'm very excited about 4k.

I am just confused when looking at the screenshot comparison; while one is bright and the other much darker I don't see a difference in detail on my computer monitor and can't tell which one is supposed to be the UHD.

UHD is darker I think, but sharpness is practically the same.

Received mine.

Unfortunately, I find this transfer to be awful. It's very garish - very 'white' and overblown. Some scenes look like it was filmed with an iPhone in harsh lighting. It comes across as looking like it has very little contrast; colors are bland etc.

By contrast the blu-ray that I already had (Cohen Media) looks wonderful.

I guess that screenshot comparison a few posts up is accurate then, thought they were maybe switched around and labeled wrong.
