Default Sony BDP-S6500 stopped playing DVDs

My Sony BDP-S6500 suddenly stopped playing DVDs. It gives this message: “Unable to play this disc. Check that the disc can be played by this unit and there are no scratches or fingerprints on the disc. The disc might not be finalized.”

I’ve tried multiple discs, including brand new ones and ones it has played in the past. Shortly before it stopped, I noticed sometimes it would leave small scratches or marks on DVDs that weren’t there before.

It still plays BDs and music CDs with no problems.

Is this fixable or should I just get a new player?

Depending on how long you've had the player, it sounds like the DVD lens may be broken and you may be better off getting a new player. It usually happens if you've had a player for a long time.

That makes sense. I’ve had the player for 3 1/2 years. Thanks for the reply.

Same thing happened to my player but it can't read neither blu ray, dvd nor cds. It is the lens too?

This baby has just nearly 4 years old, how comes it is dead already?

I would try a hard reset of the player to see if that clears it up. CD and DVD should use the same laser hardware, while BD is separate.
