Exclamation Netflix's "Voltron" (Season 4)

Hey,

So they cancelled the plans for a movie. Instead they want a new series launched on Nicktoons instead.

Quote:
Rather than make the leap straight to the big screen, the popular 80s cartoon Voltron will be launching a new animated series along with a new toy line. Variety reports that starting next year, Nicktoons will air 26 half-hour episodes of Voltron Force, which will still be about five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron, an invincible guardian sworn to defend the Universe. According to Variety, the “series will remain faithful to the old show, while introducing new recruits to fight alongside the original characters.” Naturally, you can expect new toys to accompany the new series.

Voltron joins other 80s cartoon show Thundercats as a property that is taking a step back from plans to go straight to a feature film and instead trying to rekindle interest through a new television series. The feature film adaptation hit a major snag last September when a lawsuit was filed between the owners of the television rights and the owners of the film rights.
Source.

Oh, man, they're bringing back all of my favorite cartoons. I think I'll need to invest in a DVR next year. lol

You know, of all these old cartoons they're bringing back, I don't think we'll see a new He-Man cartoon. The anti-gay movement is just too strong right now.

Why can't I have Nicktoons? Voltron, Dragon Ball Z Kai and Thundercats. It is a good time to be from the 80s, though.

Sounds good to me, hope it starts next month, could mean the Voltron box sets start dropping a bit in price too.

It starts when Iron Man has it's second season but not sure when that is. I would guess April/May but more towards May as next month seems to soon without Nick having no advertising so far.

Nicktoons Opens The Next Chapter Of Voltron In 'Voltron Force', Premiering June 16

Quote:
NICKTOONS OPENS THE NEXT CHAPTER OF VOLTRON™ IN VOLTRON FORCE™ , PREMIERING JUNE 16, 8:30 PM (ET/PT)

New Animated Action-Adventure Series Features New Recruits and Voltron Formations,

Plus All-New Theme Song from Grammy Award®-Winning Producer/Artist Swizz Beatz

NEW YORK – May 23, 2011 – Nicktoons, the fastest growing kids’ network, brings the iconic franchise Voltron™ to a new generation with the brand new animated series, Voltron Force™. The series will launch as a commercial-free presentationof the 90-minute movie, “Voltron Force: New Defenders Trilogy,” Thursday, June 16, at 8:30 p.m. (ET). The half-hour series, which features an all-new theme song produced and recorded by Grammy Award®-winning producer and artist Swizz Beatz, follows the adventures of a new class of recruits as they join forces with the original team to fight evil by forming Voltron, the legendary super robot. The first original Voltron content in 10 years, this new iteration from World Events Productions in association with Classic Media and Kickstart Productions will feature never-before-seen Voltron configurations when the team’s Lions unite. The series will regularly air Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. (ET) on Nicktoons.

“Voltron Force stays true to the concepts that made the original such a success, but also takes the action, adventure and fantastical robotic creations to the next level,” said Keith Dawkins, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nicktoons and TeenNick. “As a fan myself, it’s exciting to see the saga continue and for our network to be part of the brand’s legacy.”

“I’m truly excited to be involved in the re-emergence of this classic cartoon,” said Swizz Beatz. “I enjoyed watching Voltronas a child and now can enjoy it with my own kids.”

The original robot-action show, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, has become a massive pop-culture success since its launch in 1984. The series’ signature maneuver of combining forces to attain a common goal has resonated with many, earning references on television shows (such as South Park, The Fairly OddParents and Lost), by hip-hop artists (Swizz Beatz, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Wu Tang Clan, among others) and by athletes (like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Amar’e Stoudemire, Laurence Maroney and Chris Paul). The series also has a loyal Hollywood following of celebrities such as Jonah Hill, Megan Fox, Seth Green and Zach Galifianakis, to name a few.

Set five years after Voltron: Defender of the Universe, Voltron Force follows three new recruits – Daniel, Vince and Larmina – as they get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to train alongside their heroes – Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Allura – and learn to fly incredible robot lions. The series will journey to new planets, discover new powers and unearth ancient secrets. Voltron will be needed once again to combat a rising evil in the galaxy and a tyrant from within. Bonds will be formed, friendships will be tested and plenty of laughs will be had as the Voltron Force gels together as a team in an epic battle of good versus evil.

In the 90-minute movie premiere, “Voltron Force: New Defenders Trilogy,” Daniel and Vince are recruited into an underground resistance movement led by former members of the Voltron Force to recover the keys to the lions. They soon meet fellow classmate Larmina, and the three cadets are introduced to their Voltcoms, an advanced wrist device that acts as an activation key to the lions. Their Voltcoms are also capable of generating unique weapons and powers based on personality and fighting styles. As the new cadets explore the Castle of Lions and uncover clues to Voltron’s origins, the original Force gets their groove back to form Voltron once more, determined to take on the duel-threat of King Lotor’s Robeast and Sky Marshal Wade’s war machine.

Wonder why it's premiering on a Thursday, if this show is good enough, it will probably prompt me to get the original series on DVD.

Official VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER Logo Revealed (Exclusive)

Form feet and legs! Form arms and body! And I’ll form the unreasonably excited fan that Voltron is making its way back to our screens later this year! In January, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation revealed that, in addition to adapting Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters, they would be teaming up for a new Voltron animated series. Now Nerdist has your exclusive first look at the show’s logo and title: Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Oh, man! I don’t know about you, but the prospect of seeing the Lion Force reunited sent a nostalgic shiver up my spine. This will mark the first new Voltron animated series since 2011’s Voltron Force, which aired on Nicktoons for one season. Little is known about the series thus far, particularly about the cast and creators, but we do know that it will follow the same classic Voltron formula of uniting five teenagers in gigantic, robotic lions to protect the universe from towering evil. Only through the power of teamwork will they be able to kick some robotic ass, take some robotic names, and stop a terrible intergalactic war.

As the late, great Billy Mays once said, “But wait, there’s more!” We will also be making a visit to DreamWorks Animation to take you behind the scenes of the forthcoming series in the weeks ahead, so let us know your most burning Voltron-related questions in the comments below.

What do you think of the title? Who do you want to see provide the voices? What do you want from a new Voltron series? Let’s discuss below!

Interesting, thanks.
If this captures the style and story dialog of the original series, that would be something, but clearly they're not trying to replicate it based on the art work. We'll see how it turns out and I'll keep an open mind.

Same here. The other series is interesting, but not as focused on the small group of heroes as Voltron Lions.

I wasn't very interested in this until I saw that trailer. Now I will promptly binge all episodes as soon as it hits Netflix.

Netflix just keeps winning.

I'm slightly intrigued for this. I grew up with the '80's version but, even as a kid, it felt very formulaic...almost to where you could set your watch to each episode's lion formation, big monster reveal, and final battle.

The trailer was fine. The humorous quips were predictable, to say the least.

Still, I love that they are staying away from a CG mess. If the visuals are nice and they throw a wrinkle or two in there, this could be good.
