Default for those who use PS5 as main 4k UHD player...

what do you use to control it? i hate using the game controller and the official ps5 media controller looks more suited for streaming services as opposed to disc playback.

any suggestions for alternatives?

I think the media remote is your only option.

I only used it briefly, but when I did, I bought the Logitech IR PS4 adapter and programmed my Logitech Harmony.

You're right about that dumb remote. It's clearly made for streaming with little thought put towards it for disc playback.

Love mine, except I need to get my Fat PS3 fixed again sometime. Will not pair with my modded slim!

That PS3 remote unfortunately won't work with a PS5. Definitely way better. My best advice to original poster is to buy the PS5 remote and see if it grows on you.

just realized that my tv remote works on my ps5 - and it's basically the same as the official ps5 media remote lol. at least i can play/pause/scan forward + back and bring up the disc menu without having to use the game controller now. no chapter selection or stop button though.

I have a Nyko Blue Wave remote control for my old PS3 and it works very well for disc playback on the PS3. If you can find one for cheap, it might be a decent solution. Unfortunately I don't have a PS5 so I can't tell you if it is compatible with the PS5 or not.

**EDIT: I just saw your post about using the TV remote. That seems like a much simpler solution than trying to track down and test one of these old PS3 Nyko remotes!

The PS3 remote was a premium product, imo. It’s too bad we don’t get that same quality these days. PS3 was also my very first Blu-ray player.

I still regularly use a PS3 remote since I use a PS3 slim as my region-free player. Mine is a newer model with a few more buttons than the one pictured above. It’s not quite as intuitive as the one that came with my Sony 950H (best remote I’ve ever had, especially since ARC works flawlessly on my current setup) but it’s literally the only remote I have that can control my BD player, TV and receiver. It allows me to scroll through all of my receiver inputs too, something even the official receiver remote doesn’t let me do for some damned reason.

PS5 media remote is trash by comparison. Even the PDP remote for the PS4 is better than what Sony came up with for the PS5.

Does the PS5 choke on BD100 discs like the Sony standalone players?

PS3 remote is god tier and has never been topped for a game system. It's the one reason I never played movies on my PS4 over my PS3 since I bought it. I'm on my second PS3 slim my original console died a few years ago, so I don't play movies on it anymore to save that mileage. My fat PS3 died right before I had to get my first slim and that one played SACD. Still on the same remote. Wish it worked for more things since it's bluetooth.

I know about this reputation but I’ve never experienced it personally. I’ve always used the later model however, perhaps they did something to improve that one’s battery life.

Very small sample size but my PS5 has played every disc I’ve thrown at it. Most had failed to play on my old UB820 so at the very least it seems to handle discs with minor imperfections well.

I've had both models and never experienced that. Maybe it's to do with the type of battery? I always use Energizer Lithiums because they've got great battery life

For what it's worth just got the PS4 PDP remote to pair with the PS5. Much better remote for playing 4K UHD's and Blu-ray's on it. I like to skim through discs frequently to get to scenes I like to rewatch and having that chapter button there is huge.

Whoa, I had no idea my old PDP PS4 media remote would work on the PS5. I was still using it with my PS4 up until a few months ago since PS4 Twitch had my preferred TV interface. I stupidly updated and got the crappy new Twitch so I thought my PDP remote was now useless. Glad to give it new life.

On a related note, I’m selling my official PS5 media remote. PM if you’re interested. I’ll be including a black rubber wrap that makes it easier to hold.

I would keep the PS5 remote because the PDP PS4 remote while it works is not perfect since it is for the PS4. You have to connect it via Bluetooth.
