Default Mission Impossible 3 Blu-Ray Oct 30 (DD+)

http://today.reuters.com/news/articl...ILM-MI3-DC.XML

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Call it the "Mission: Impossible III" triple play. In an industry first, Paramount Home Entertainment is expected to announce Friday (August 11) that it will release the $133.4 million summer movie hit on DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc all on the same day, October 30.

It's the first movie ever to be released simultaneously on standard DVD as well as on both next-generation, high-definition optical disc formats.

"This is certainly a significant milestone in the launch of the high-def formats," said veteran industry analyst Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Retailing. "It's clearly way too soon to know which format is going to prevail, and it may be years. So I think we'll see a lot more dual-format releases, at least in the short term. The interesting moment will be if we see that from somebody besides Paramount and Warner Home Video, the only two studios that have announced support for both formats."

The two-disc Special Collector's Edition DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc will each come loaded with special features, including five deleted scenes, Easter eggs (hidden special features), theatrical trailers and four documentaries: "The Making of the Mission," "Mission Action: Inside the Action Unit," "Visualizing the Mission" and "Scoring the Mission."

The HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions also will feature the film in 1080p High Definition with 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus.

"I'm thrilled that people with get a chance to see 'M:I-3' with the best possible picture and audio," director J.J. Abrams said.

In addition, the HD-DVD release will include an "enhanced commentary" with Abrams and star Tom Cruise that shows them talking in a corner of the screen while the movie is playing.

The Special Collector's Edition DVD also will feature a regular commentary with Cruise and Abrams, a "Moviefone Unscripted" segment in which the two answer questions from fans, tribute montages and a photo gallery.

A single-disc DVD also will be available with only the commentary, "The Making of the Mission" documentary and the deleted scenes.

Yes, but that's not a problem since Paramount is wisely going to use VC-1 instead of MPEG2. No space issue whatsoever. (At least that's the way I understand it. I'm trying to find concrete verification on that...)

If that's indeed true:
I easily expect this to be one of the best BD discs on the current market when it hits and would be shocked if it isn't a dead-on equal for its HD-DVD bretheren in every respect.

Thank God they are finally using a different codec, I'll give it a rental once I get my Sony player. Do the Blockbuster stores carry blu-ray, I saw that Blockbuster online does, but not sure about the stores? Maybe it's on a store to store basis

A shame about the BR version not having the PIP feature. I'm hoping when BD-Live players come out this absense will be a thing of the past.

A minor irritant and a trend that I hope doesn't continue:

The Blu-ray Disc version has been shunned from any exclusive bonus materials.

This is all very interesting indeed.

JTK - where did that 'shunned' quote come from.

I think because of 5gb less space. DL HD DVD = 30gb, SL BD = 25GB. Even with VC-1 codec space is still an issue. AFAIK current movie releases on DL HD DVD are around 27 GB. In the end SL BD will hav espace issues even with advanced codecs. Move itself will be good, I certainly hope so, but not much for the extras.
On the other hand MS folks on AVS claim VC-1 codec is good enough to cram 4hours of quality HD video on 30GB, but I doubt that.

The release day is weird though... October 30th is on a monday, normally movies are released on Tuesdays. I wonder if someone made an error.

This will be a key "vs." situation set of titles since they're coming out on both HD formats.

Yeah, no one really knows for sure.

I had though Paramount was going Vc-1 on all of their next gen optical discs. I could have sworn I read that somewhere...

What concerns me a little bit, and maybe is a clue, is this idea that certain extra features are being left off the BD version. That would suggest to me a space constraint, or at least space concerns, which would then of course suggest: BD25/MPEG-2.

We need more concrete information.
