Post PlayStation Creates Game Preservation Team

Quote:
PlayStation has set up a new ‘game preservation’ team, according to a new employee.

Garrett Fredley, who had previously been working as a build engineer for Canadian mobile developer Kabam, has now joined PlayStation as a senior build engineer.

Celebrating his new employment, Fredley posted a message on his Twitter and LinkedIn pages expressing his excitement at joining the new ‘preservation’ team.

“Today is my first day as a senior build engineer for PlayStation, working as one of their initial hires for the newly created Preservation team,” Fredley wrote.

Hopefully the guy won't be fired for tweeting that, and who knows what it means for the future (pardon the pun).

Thanks.

Game Preservation is great for the sake of history. I have most of my older consoles preserved with most of the games.
Unfortunately, that article doesn't go into any detail about explaining what is done to preserve FIFA and other games mentioned.

I imagine it's more than putting the game onto a disc. Maybe they transfer the console to an underground chamber for storage, and that gives him the title of Preservation Engineer.

Yeah it's a bit of a... lacklustre piece of news to be honest, so we will see (we hope) if anything substantial does come out of it.

My personal hope is that it is something substantial, but it's ultimately up to Sony if they're willing to invest in true backwards compatibility and ah em... "game preservation."

I hear what you're saying, and that would be cool to see all prior PS games available to play on PS5.

Yeah. I mean, I do have my PS3 connected and everything. I think I need to get a new controller and USB cable, since I have no idea where my old USB cable is.

That's true. For PS2 and PS1, because my newer 4K doesn't even have RCA red/yellow white cable inputs anymore, I had to buy an RCA to HDMI adapter just to be able to play those old consoles. Same for my Genesis, etc.

While unlicensed, there are emulation console machines out there that include 60,000 console and arcade games on them with crystal clear graphics, though at the cost of some other features sometimes. But it still is interesting to see games that were 240p or whatever, having 720p resolution or better. Many of those game developers are out of business, but many aren't, so it's surprising to see those games being sold in a single package.

Hopefully Playstation can put something together to emulate all of the PS1, 2, 3 games of the past. And not choppy framerates like in the PS4 GTA "remasters" trilogy, which had issues with vertical lines cutting through the screen too.

Yeah, let's hope.

Personally I'd be very worried if I was that guy. It seems to me like the sort of thing you don't want to post just right off the bat, going by how apathetic Sony has seemed to be towards BC.

Yeah, that guy should probably keep that kind of stuff confidential if he's really excited about the job and Sony had yet to make any official announcements. He said he has a lot of experience, so maybe they'll go easy on him.
