![]() "Amblin Partners has won a pitched spec package battle and will finance Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’ World War I film 1917. The film will begin production next April, for U.S. release December 2019 through Amblin’s distribution partner Universal. Mendes wrote the original script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The project marks Mendes’ first film as credited screenwriter." SOURCE Last edited by Cremildo; 06-18-2018 at 08:50 PM. Reason: Forgot the quotation marks |

Spectre is mediocre as hell but him doing a WW1 film has got me interested. I hope Wonder Woman got people interested in WW1 since there are very few films made about that war. You've got your Gallipoli's, Path's of Glory, and whatnot but nothing truly big and epic.

He seems to be out of ideas. I suppose trying to maintain a level of consistency after American Beauty is impossible. I enjoyed his little road trip film with John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, as well as the Titanic reunion, but I hope he gets back to that biting form of his early career.

Unfortunately, having seen Mendes' pretty dismal production of To the Green Fields Beyond at the Donmar, I've got really low expectations for this. It was a poor play badly produced and badly staged and its attempts to make the subject matter more relevant to modern audiences by having its WW1 tank crew snorting cocaine were just laughable. On the basis of that, particularly the sloppy research and modern attitudes it imposed on its characters, the Great War is something Mendes really isn't the right director for.

I'm no longer a fan. Perhaps I should've said, "uninspired." Hollywood's take on war and the human cost is predictably staid. I don't expect this film to be an exception.
