Default The Forest (1982) -- Code Red - March 9, 2021

I love slashers but have never seen this one... How bad is it? Better/worse than something like The Prey (which I liked)?

Much worse than The Prey. One of the worst slasher movies I've ever seen.

Low on the body count and gore. Definitely worse than the prey, but I enjoy it. It has a weird plot involving ghosts, and the setting is still pretty nice. Only for hardened Friday the 13th ripoff fans.

I enjoy it but it's no The Prey. I love The Prey, I'm merely amused by The Forest. The best part is the opening.

The Forest is technically competent (for the most part), maybe suffers from a bit of overacting from at least one of the actors and has an odd but fresh-feeling plot twist (ghosts lol) but still fun IMO. I liked it WAY more than Don't Go In the Woods. Actually, I hate DGITW

Yeah, DGITW is bad-bad instead of good-bad.

Hard not to get sucked in by the cover art on The Forest. That painting is everything I love about '80s horror. Makes me want to get it "just because".

Man opinions seem to be all over the place on this one. I'm genuinely intrigued now. I really liked Don't Go in the Woods... Alone! But found The Prey dreadfully dull. I'm looking forward to this now more so because I really don't know what to expect.

Well, THIS guy seems to think it's some kind of underappreciated classic, so I really don't know

I would say the forest is a lot closer to a smaller scale prey than dont go in the woods. Have you checked out twisted nightmare? It's more competent, but sillier like don't go in the woods.

FWIW, I received The Forest from Amazon today and it had a shrink-wrapped slip.

Slashers in general can be really hit or miss, mood dependent, etc. Nostalgia definitely helps. I was definitely a much bigger fan of the genre as a teen and in my early 20s and was more forgiving of supar efforts.

Nice transfers also help big-time. I hated Dont Go in the Woods Alone when I saw it on VHS (OK hated might be to strong a word as I made myself an EP VHS copy).

I love it, but I also love 'Scream' (1981) so don't count on me.

Got my copy today in the mail. I have the Code Red DVD, which I can finally retire now. I like this flick quite a bit; it's a bit less cheesy than Don't Go in the Woods IMO, and has a whole supernatural subplot that is unusual for a slasher. I have a thing for backwoods slasher flicks in general, so this one has always been up my alley. I'd say it's slightly better than Don't Go in the Woods, but not as good as The Prey (which I absolutely adore) or Just Before Dawn (which might be the crown jewel of them all).

I just ordered this partly due to the fact that I REALLY like the cover. I've heard some people say it's kind of boring but it's only $15 on Amazon right now, and some of the fun in collecting movies (for me) is admiring the artwork. Hopefully it's enjoyable.

Well, I fell victim to the cool cover art.

This one is pretty boring.

Interesting if not bizarre premise, but so many shots of people just meandering around in the woods. Most of the kills happen off screen and the gore is pretty tame.

A blind buy fail. Still like the cover though.
