Tell me about it. This is just one of those classic films or mini-series that have always remained one of my top ten favorite classic films. Besides The Martian Chronicles, The Prisoner, the original series, NOT the reboot, is also on my favorites list. I'm just glad that this classic mini-series is finally coming to Blu-ray.

I've heard of this and it always piqued my interest, but I've never seen it. This is great news as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously? If you love classic science fiction, you really need to check this one out. It adapts Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" and it's a really fine piece of work. I'd hate to see what this film would have looked it if it was produced today or remade. This was one of those original science fiction film classics that I fell in love with. Just like Forbidden Planet and the original Planet of the Apes movie series. Sorry guys, but I thought that everything from Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes through the recent trilogy was nothing but a piece of crap. Some things should never be rebooted, remade or created as part of the original film series.

Check it out, when you get the chance. It does start out slow but it's well worth watching the entire three-part mini-series.

Whatever they came up with today would be akin to the IRobot film with Will Smith (and I say that as someone who generally likes his films). But I think that there is an ethereal quality to the novel that is hard to translate to film hence the need to turn it into an action film.

If you love science fiction, you can't go wrong with a script by Bradbury (on his own novel) and Richard Matheson. I have a signed copy of this novel and it's been a favorite for many, many years.

Honestly? I doubt it's ever possible to faithfully adapt a novel or printed source material to the movie screen. Despite how much they try, characters in a movie that were adapted form a published story rarely resemble their counterparts in a published book.

Hollywood being Hollywood, they always alter too much the characters or stories that we have fell in love with seem to think that they can;t adapt a published story into a movie or TV series without drastically altering the conceptualized characters or stories. While many have come close, they often leave things out.

While the Lord of the Rings trilogy came very close and was praised by fans and critics, The Hobbit failed miserably. The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Way of the Warrior" was also a failure because the published adaption of the episode (adapted from the movie script) contained scenes that were never included in the episode that would have made that episode made sense.

That's the problem with these major movie studios.

But, that's getting off the mark. Personally, I hope they never remake The Martian Chronicles. It's already been adapted and doesn't require a remake. This is why The Prisoner should never have been adapted and Hollywood is obsessed with remakes, reboots and re-invisioned movies and television shows.

Take a look at Titanic, that has been remade a countless number of times. There are so many other classic novels out there that should be adapted. HEH.

The Martian Chronicles (mini-series) - Kino Lorber Reveals a Release Date for the 1980 Miniseries on DVD and Blu-ray
Look for it at the end of June, according to the studio classics' schedule
Posted by David Lambert
3/14/2018

Back in November we passed along word that Kino Lorber is working on a first-ever Blu-ray Disc release and also a DVD re-release for 1980's miniseries The Martian Chronicles, starring Rock Hudson, Darren McGavin, Roddy McDowall, Bernadette Peters, Joyce Van Patten, Gayle Hunnicutt, Bernie Casey and others.

At the time we had no other info than the heads-up that this title was in-the-works. But now Kino Lorber has revealed their spring-and-early-summer schedule for 2018, and The Martian Chronicles for DVD and Blu-ray Disc was included on the list! It shows that we can expect this to be available on June 26th.

Details, pricing, package art and other info has not yet been finalized and sent out thus far. But stay tuned and we'll update you, as further information comes in. Our thanks to longtime reader John Cerone for pointing this out to us.

Yes!

I saw this once as a kid years ago but don’t remember much about it, except I really liked it.

I was actually on Amazon and eBay about a week ago considering buying the DVDs. But I thought prices seemed high for only a dvd copy.

And now a week later we learn we are finally getting a Blu-ray version. Awesome news!

Agreed! The Martian Chronicles mini-series is one of my favorite sci-fi films (and yes, I'm counting it as a film) of all time. I remember seeing bits & pieces of this when it first aired on TV in early 1980. I was a little kid at the time, and the story both fascinated me & disturbed me. It stayed with me throughout the years, and is one of my earliest memories of a TV show.

The tele-film had a lot of interesting elements, including very unique & bizarre martians (who still look humanoid), several stories that weren't necessarily connected too much, but all still took place on Mars (in different time periods), and great acting. There was definitely a creepy element that permeated the whole mini-series as well.

My favorite sequence was the one
[Show spoiler]where the astronauts landed on what looked like Earth, and encountered what looked like people from their past (parents, long-dead relatives, brothers/sisters, etc.) & what also looked like their respective home-towns. However, when they discovered the truth it was far too late.

I didn't see the mini-series in it's entirety until the DVD set, back in the 200X's.

I have dim memories of reading the Ray Bradbury book (which was actually a collection of short stories, similar in structure to the tele-series) years after seeing the TV film, and not liking it nearly as much.

I still have the old dvd.

When I first saw this on tv so long ago I was disappointed because I read the book and it was so good.

Felt like the tv version was a bit dull and didn't have the same umph or impact as the book.

That said I'll by the bluray.

Very excited for this! I remember watching it years ago and really liking it. But over time, I’ve forgotten most of the plots and characters. So it will be like seeing it new all over

Just learned about this, and I'me extremely excited to hear the news. Stunning blu-ray art too. This is a must-own for me.

Now bring on V:The original mini-series and V:The Final Battle!
