Blade Runner: Which Cut is your Favorite?

A lot of people say the Final Cut is the best, but I also see a lot of people that aren't pleased with the changes, so let's all discuss which cut is ours favorite and why.

Final Cut

- No voice over
- Best color timing
- Trimmed some very long shots (because a voice over was laid over them)
- Removed visible wires
- Replaced background when the dove flies away
- Contains all the violence
- Best pacing
- Added effects/changes really add to the experience

I agree with all these points. I usually don't care for special or unrated editions but The Final Cut is the best of all the cuts. That being said, it's kinda cool to throw on the workprint cut late at night on a lazy weekend. It's a cut I thought I'd never see and I never thought I'd have it on Blu-Ray!

I was actually shocked to hear Blade Runner done as a voiceover in the audio dept. I'm thinking "WHY??" I've yet to see the Final Cut, so I can't conclude yet...though now I'm even more curious. Blade Runner has been showing a lot on SyFy and Starz as of late, so I might find the Final Cut version either to buy (which I don't mind) or at least rent it...

The Final Cut is my favourite. Voice-over or no voice-over, though, it's still an excellent film.

No doubt, a great movie!! I was just shocked it was edited as voice-over, that's all...no biggie....

Theatrical Cut

- Less gore
- Like the narration. Specially in the final acts of the film.
- Hate the unicorn and its implications towards Decker and more importantly to Batty's final act of humanity.
- Best color timing (No Micheal Bay TEAL push in it)
- Like the ending with it being a bit more upbeat.
- Originally I liked the Final Cut's dove release better. However I now prefer the Theatrical Cut's blue sky version more now because of it's symbolism of Batty heading to a much much better place. (The sky opens up to receive him)

Also regarding the Final Cut's updated effects corrections, I never really even noticed the Spinner wires or the stunt woman's face unless I was intent on looking for them.

To me the only real major stand out for the Final Cut is it's much better lossless soundtrack.



Now the fantastic thing that all these versions have in common is that they are ALL available for purchase!

You forgot completely refilming Zhora's final scene with Joanna Cassidy thirty years later replacing the original stunt-double sequence.

I think I prefer Roy's "I want more life, father" to the original "I want more life, f##ker". Just sounded more sincere. The original line kinda spoils Roy turning on Tyrell and killing him in the end.

International Cut has all the above plus 2 seconds of extra gore. So the International Cut beats the Theatrical Cut whatever!

Yeah I was amazed at getting the Workprint cut. I only ever had it on a dodgy VHS before that!

Who's Decker exactly?!

And everyone knows the Theatrical/International Cut ending isnt great. Oh look! Its The Shining! Look! Theres a yellow car! And its a nice sunny day....doesnt fit in with the film. Which is why it was removed.

Im imagining furious searches on google right now...

I prefer "..father" too. Theres quite a bit of argument about this though. Like you say, its more sincere. And more chilling to me anyway.

None of them... needs another cut that brings back some of the better pieces of the voice over to the Final Cut. Given the options, International > Final Cut.

I highly doubt it - we've got 5 released versions as it is and I think thats enough for anybody!

As it is I only watch 3 cuts these days (the other 2 are just not worth it) -

theatrical has a special place in my heart as it was the version i saw first. I like the voice overs (especially one at the end) although i do like the DC ending and im torn with final cuts darkening of the sky when he releases the dove, as the blue sky represented a release to something better. well thats how i saw it anyway.

Yeah but the blue sky was changed because it doesnt fit in with the constant dark and rain of the film and I quite agree too. Like the international/theatrical ending with the yellow car across the mountains in the sun...

It fits the same way the original dove release does. The characters are escaping from that dreary place and heading to salvation, paradise or whatever.

And are you telling me that you were bothered by that the FIRST time you saw it? Or was it not until you found out that it was not Ridley's preferred choice and the producers stuck it in there?

And it's not nearly as bad as that prancing unicorn that Ridley lifted from its sequel...er I mean his next film. Every time I now see that scene I am taken out of the movie and start thinking about Tom Cruze(sp) and fairies with pointed ears. Oh look! It's Legend! And that ain't too cool.

I finally watched this in full the other day and I gotta say, I don't understand the love for it. I thought it was very, very boring.
It looked great but as a movie, I just found it boring.
