The Great Santini

I haven't thought about The Great Santini (1979) in a long time, but this is definitely one film I would like to see brought out on blu-ray. Growing up in a military family, this movie really resonated with me when I first saw it on cable in the late 1980s.

In a career of great performances, I would rank this and Tender Mercies as my favorite Robert Duvall films, even more than his westerns and other better known movies. Duvall plays a U.S. Marine aviator named Bull Meecham who loves the corps and is a renowned fighter pilot. The film contrasts his success as a warrior wtih his failings as a husband and father, and is told from the perspective of his son. Very good acting from the entire cast with a moving story. Hope we see this soon.
