USA Sector 7 3D Blu-ray (2011) [Region A Locked]

Moderator note: Sector 7 was released on 3D Blu-ray in the US and Hong Kong. Both releases are Region A locked and have English subtitles (the US release also has an English dub track). There is a shortened Region B locked French release but this is not English-friendly.

Original post:
Actors: Ji-won Ha, Sung-kee Ahn
Directors: Ji-hun Kim
Format: Color, Dolby, NTSC, Subtitled, Widescreen
Language: Korean, English
Subtitles: English
Region: Region A/1 (Read more about DVD/Blu-ray formats.)
Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1
Number of discs: 1
Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Studio: Gaiam - Entertainment
DVD Release Date: June 26, 2012
Run Time: 112 minutes

Description:
Quote:
Directed by Kim Ji-hoon and produced by JK Youn (Tidal Wave), the sci-fi action thriller Sector 7 revolves around an oil rig crew forced to battle a deadly creature at sea. Hae-jun works at an offshore rig in Sector 7, a real-life joint-development zone that harbors Korea’s hopes of one day becoming energy-independent. Her greatest dream is to find oil, an obsessive quest that has yielded no results. Along with a crew that includes Dong-soo and ship captain Jeong-man, Hae-jun decides to conduct one last drilling expedition before withdrawing as instructed by headquarters. But when things start to go dreadfully wrong on the rig, the crew is overwhelmed by the disconcerting feeling that something is out there . . .
Here was my selling point, read this on another DVD website (about the 3d, I've read better reviews on the movie itself):
Quote:
The first Korean film to be shot in 3D for IMAX screens, Sector 7 is a movie that bends over backward to give the viewer bang for their buck. The 3D is deep and extreme, the CG spectacle frequent, and the finale is just plain over-the-top, with -- seriously, literally -- more explosions than I remember in Transformers 3 packed into a span of 10 minutes. Of course, when "more" is your only creative mandate, it's shouldn't be surprising that the film lacks any sort of narrative consistency, and drags on a good 15 minutes past a seemingly obvious finish line.
I found my copy on Amazon for 18.00 USD (that is with shipping), pretty cheap. I'm excited for this to arrive, has anyone else watched this yet? Care to share your thoughts if you have?

The English is a dub so hopefully they casted voices correctly, nothing worse than a big burly guy with a squeaker voice

You had me until the end. I will not watch a dubbed film. Subtitles or bust for this guy

edit: duh, it has subs, too. I'm interested again. Let us know how it is

I prefer subtitles as well but I still find them odd while watching a 3D movie, especially on the bottom of the screen if the negative parallax moves beyond the parallax of the text. I'll definitely come back and review though! Ron's notes seem promising so it's looking good.........

The dubbed job isn't quite as distracting as some of the others out there, surprisingly. When the film first started I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually very entertaining and kept my interest all the way through. By the end, I loved it! I watched it on Netflix so I wasn't able to see it in 3D, but if done right, I definitely seen a lot of potential there.

Finally going to watch this tonight! It arrived last Thursday but we just had too much going on over the weekend to fit in a movie. I'll comment on it tomorrow for sure.

Watched the Korean version a few weeks ago with English subs. Not a bad movie but kinda weird. Pretty good 3D at times. The guy that got his lip bit sure is one freaky looking little thing.

I enjoyed the film though it was VERY slow to start. Once the action got moving it was better. The effects were pretty good, the monster pretty damn ugly. I found the parts where they were riding the motorcycles to be funny, obvious green screen with the actors and pretending to ride - I couldn't stop laughing after watching an over-emotional left turn heh

All in all, good 3D movie. The effect was very subtle. As for the English dub - they did good, I only felt the awkward feeling when somebody says something with the complete wrong tone of voice once or twice.

i saw it in 2d, but i payed attention to which parts would look awesome in 3d.. the last 20 minutes of the movie seemed to have the most 3d-wise potential. last fight was pretty damn good.

Awesome 3D experience this one. Really great looking, strong 3D throughout. Fans of Deep Rising will no doubt get a lot of enjoyment from this!

Deep Rising is a favorite horror/action movie in the style of Evil Dead 2, only set on a giant cruise liner attacked by tentacle snakes with plenty of humorous, over the top style and gore, sounds like a promising comparison. Thanks. Glad to hear about the 3D also.

I picked this one up a few days ago after positive words from old cdx47 on the “Last 3D Blu-ray you watched thread”. His positivity was contagious as it also encouraged a couple of others to buy a copy, including WaverBoy, who subsequently had good words of his own to say about the 3D.

A quick search found HighDef Digest saying it “made excellent use of 3D, with extraordinary dimensionality”. And there’s a quote from Fangoria on the box saying, “This is 3D done right!” My favourite YouTube 3D reviewer, Go Find Fun, thought the 3D was good too. Finally, I dig up this ancient (albeit brief) thread and find glowing words from old Levcore himself too.

Man, is my thumb not on the pulse of the 3D crowd with this one: For all but a total of about two minutes’ worth (which I thought were genuinely very nice), I thought the 3D was hopeless, amongst the weakest/shallowest I’ve ever seen, just about useless.

For an apparently natively shot film (I didn’t notice obvious conversion errors, so I assume it was native?), it looked to me like they’d set the interaxial to its absolute minimum for virtually the entire movie. But its 3D clearly has its fans, so this is one of those occasions where I’m thinking maybe it’s me…

Anyone else who’s seen this Korean oil rig monster movie have any thoughts?

I believe this is actually a conversion, isn’t it? I think it’s stated as such in the other thread where this film came up (the Last Movie You Bought Or Watched thread). I’ll agree that after the opening underwater scene, which has pretty astounding in-your-face 3D for a conversion and definitely resembles natively-shot/rendered strength, the 3D is pretty mild from what I could tell when flipping through some of the rest of it. I’m sitting down to watch the whole bloody thing right now and will return with my fully formulated thoughts! (Also, this and TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS would make good candidates for your return to YouTube, hint hint… )

Also, I gotta say the opening company logos of both CJ Entertainment and JK Film are both stunningly beautiful and effective in 3D. I do appreciate nice touches like that!

Apparently it is a conversion although the first 3D underwater shots make it seem otherwise. After those shots, the first half of the movie has lot's of talking and mostly mild 3D*. The 2nd half is where the 3D gets better with better depth and some really fun pop outs.

* The movie itself is sometimes fun, sometimes terrible, sometimes both in the same scene I watched the French version where they've removed some of the excess dialogue which made the movie watchable because it got to the action more economically. However there are no English subtitles for this version. The original and English version are longer and as @Telegram Sam found out, you may struggle to get through the first half of the move

Ok, just finished watching it. The film itself is pretty much your standard ALIEN/THING clone, not great, not terrible, just okay, if unnecessarily protracted. BUT, if the 3D would have kept up the same strength as the opening scene throughout, this would be a must-own. One of my fave bits of this first sequence is a really effective transition when a monitor screen view turns into the actual underwater view, all in excellent 3D. Sadly, there’s only a handful of decent 3D shots after the opening sequence. Here are a few:

The jellyfish scene about 34 minutes in is nice.

A creature busting out of a water-filled glass tube at 59:55

A nice shot of monster tentacle popout at 1:09:22

Underwater shot at 1:10:13

Monster attack shot at 1:12:45

A decent monster attack shot at 1:16:24

A monster emergence shot at 1:19:26

A glass explosion shot at 1:24:25

An underwater shot at 1:33:26

And a few other bits here and there. It most certainly isn’t in strong 3D throughout, or even medium. Apart from the opening and a handful of shots, it’s almost all very mild. All in all, a largely wasted 3D opportunity. Color me disappointed.

This is not a native 3D movie. It's an early 3D conversion by Venture 3D. I've not watched it in full yet, but it looked pretty weak to me too--on par with other conversions being done in 2011. Check out Mr. Go (2013) if you want to see a Korean movie with great native 3D--it's a joy. There's a fair amount of native Korean 3D that never made it to disc.

For me that's why the shorter French version might be better. They removed 10 minutes of mostly dialogue from the first half of the movie then other bits and pieces that get you to the action and better 3D moments quicker. It's unfortunate that there are no English subs.
