Netflix controls it in the US, so it won't be getting a disc at all here. If you want a disc, you'll need to buy a foreign one.

I saw it in a US theater, but I can't remember if there were any portions in foreign languages that would require English subtitles.

I'm hoping Criterion Collection picks up the US rights for a 4K disc and maybe StudioCanal for the UK? I have a feeling Eagle's release will not have English subtitles.

Anything could happen, but 99% of Netflix titles never get a physical media release.

The handful that have had Criterion releases were clearly because their directors pushed for it, and I believe they were all titles that Netflix controlled worldwide, so those Criterion releases were the only physical releases possible.

Maria is going to be released in loads of countries on BD. Netflix doesn't have it in every market. The chance it will ever be released on disc in the US is minimal, better to pick up a foreign disc.

I saw this in a theater in November when it came out and I can't remember...

Does it have any bits in foreign languages, which would require subtitles?

Or is it entirely in English.

I remember it being entirely in English, but I could be wrong.

I read an interview in my newspaper the other day with Angelina Jolie where she told that she learned Italian for her role. They didn't mention what she used it for but I would guess for the singing which in parts is her real voice.

I’ve streamed the film in December and can’t remember any foreign parts either except for the occasional "Madame". Haluk Bilginer and Valeria Golino also spoke English, so I think we’re fine.

What’s concerning me most with this release is whether Eagle are getting the film’s Atmos mix, which wasn’t always the case in the past.

I got the StudioCanal BD today and will cancel the Eagle 4K as that Blu-ray is as perfect as one can be. I’m not saying this often but this is a demo disc in picture and sound. More details here:

[Show spoiler]As short and simple as that. It’s astonishingly well encoded (probably VDMS) as all the variances in grain density and color are reproduced so, so well. Large parts of the color palette Edward Lachman used in the film is usually very difficult for encoders - the bright green, the large yellow walls, the sunlight and all of that at once - but not here.

The film also doesn’t look filtered with textures that are 4K-like. With such a good BD in hands I wonder how marvelously they’d have encoded a 4K UHD and the videophile in me wishes they’d done one.

The Atmos mix is equally perfect and is a huge improvement over anything that’s available on streaming during the musical sequences in particular.

As I’m so happy with the BD, I’ll sit this one out.

"Maria" is such a beautiful movie. Visually speaking, it was one of the best from 2024. I'll pick up the Eagle 4k UHD for sure, but the Studio Canal BD does look fantastic.

Can anyone confirm the movie is entirely 1000% in English, with no need for subtitles, and no onscreen text?

I saw it in the theater when it came out last year, but I wasn't paying attention to that.

I want to be sure the Italian UHD won't have any issues for English-speaking viewers.

Can’t confirm 100% beyond a date in the beginning of the film which is written like that: September 16, 1977. Not sure if there are others but I wouldn’t count on that date being taken over by Eagle like that.

If you want to be really sure that you’re getting an original presentation, consider the StudioCanal BD, which I’ve detailed earlier in the thread here. It also has the film’s Atmos mix compared to the Eagle which only has 5.1.

I got a chance to watch the Eagle 4k UHD last night. First and foremost, the opening credits are in Italian, the September date is presented in Italian, and there are a couple of moments of burned in translations in Italian. The video is beautiful as expected, with nice subtle use of HDR. The audio is solid as well. While I am overall satisfied with the Eagle 4k UHD, I would stick with the Studio Canal blu ray for original presentation.
