Default Disney Is The Big Loser Of Summer 2023 - Screen Rant article

Disney Is The Big Loser Of Summer 2023 - Examining Its $900 Million Worth Of Box Office Disappointments

https://screenrant.com/disney-movies...sappointments/

In a nutshell:
The final reason for Disney's failures, however, is that most of these movies just aren't good. The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Haunted Mansion have all received mixed-to-poor reviews, with these negative receptions causing many viewers to skip out on the films. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, on the other hand, was a huge critical success, which helped in its box office performance. Disney's consistent stream of box office flops has been caused by its consistent stream of low-quality movies, something that can only be changed by putting quality first once again.

My Grades:

TLM 2023 - Poor
Elemental - Good
Dial Of Destiny - Excellent
Haunted Mansion - Good
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 - Let me just say I'm paying $40 for the steelbook Day One something I've really tried not to do anymore

Perhaps we should have a whip-round for them

I enjoyed Indy, shame it wasn’t a mega hit, but apart from the occasionally enjoyable MCU romp (GotG3 was fairly good), Disney just ain’t doing it for me anymore - I have pretty much zero interest in the constant stream of live action remakes they poop out.
I’ll sometimes watch a newish film on D+, but more often than not I’ll use that service for watching older (and far superior) Disney stuff from yesteryear.

Not passing any judgement on this particular topic, but this website in general is just click-bait nonsense.

They lost money this summer. They'll adjust their strategy and move on. I anticipate cutting budgets a little. $200 million for an animated film is just begging for trouble.

Disney went from a 30 percent market share of the box office this year to a 23 percent share over the last few months and is about to be overtaken by Universal, and this despite releasing far more films under a multitude of divisions. Universal is about to pass them based almost exclusively off of just Mario and Oppenheimer. Yikes!

I can't help but feel that culture wars are part of the reason.

Must be seeing Oppenheimer for the 12th time so they can come back and tell us they still can’t hear the dialogue.

The worst culprit of Disney's (and their subsideries) output the last few years, has been the quality of the writing. We're also seeing a remarkable drop in the quality of visual effects this year; as if the necessary workforce isn't available or has been downgraded due to budget concerns.

It leaves the field wide open for other studios and smaller and mid-budget films to reclaim some of their lost market share.

This failure is well deserved, I can't remember the last time I felt the need to see a Disney movie at the cinema. They've spent years churning out reboot/spin-off crap and cheapening their output to 'content', now audiences are waiting for it to come to streaming (if they're watching it at all). Disney are totally asleep at the wheel.

It feels like a lot of bad decisions have come to a head for them this summer. MCU oversaturation, too many sterile live-action-remakes, over-reliance on nostalgia, and a general lowering of the bar while blurring the lines between their theatrical and D+ releases. It's been a long time since I've watched any Disney content that didn't feel like something I'd already seen 100 times before.

Well, to be fair to them, people lapped up generic crap like Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Lion King calling them revolutionary.

I think every single one of their live action shot-for-shot remakes made hundreds of millions of dollars. Maybe the pandemic killed millennials desire for nostalgia and they finally realized the originals were better than the CGI crap.

Then again, Little Mermaid is still making nearly $300m in the US alone.

Disney's been pushing out mostly crap for a decade and the audience embraced it all.

I wish they'd put out more interesting live action stuff, I miss the days when we were getting movies like John Carter, The Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland.

Never saw Tomorrowland. But I liked Lone Ranger and LOVED John Carter.

Sadly they failed and that seemed to scare them from trying certain things again.

Shame. I'd watch the shit out of a John Carter series. That whole set up was amazing. I put some blame on it being called just John Carter though. Pretty generic. Should have been something like John Carter and the Princess of Mars.
