Image: This dual-layered Blu-ray looks absolutely fabulous. Part credit to the sumptuous visuals and also to the crisp 1080P - MPEG-4 transfer. It may very well be one of the best looking hi-def discs for a film of over 20 years. Colors are vibrant and lush without overpowering (skin-tones true) and detail shows some remarkably pristine moments - approaching the 3-dimensional quality we have come to expect from the best of Blu-ray visuals. Background noise dissolves to appear as grain. Contrast is exceptional defined within the workable parameters of the original film by exporting deep rich black levels. This towers over my old, already strong, SD edition (from 2001?) and I'm extremely pleased with this, David Lean's last film but first to Blu-ray. One word: 'Wow'!

I can't wait to get "A Passage to India" on Blu-ray next week! For this to be director David Lean's final film, I'd say that it ranks right up there with other Lean classics such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago"! I thought that the underrated Judy Davis was mesmerizing in this movie, but it's just too bad that she didn't win the Best Actress Oscar for the movie. But anyways, I will definitely be picking this up next week!

an exaggeration- it looks good but not as stunning as beaver suggests. There are no flaws to the transfer .

Pity we had to contend with A Passage To India instead of Leans more important works.

The thing is they are releasing a new DVD of Lawrence Of Arabia-- 'Lawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs)' but no Blu-ray version?

I've preordered A Passage to India with full confidence in Sony the day it went up for preorder. Glad Gary liked the disc so much.

There is no reason to call this disc a "pity" for any reason -- especially since Lean's career encompasses so much more than high-end spectaculars, and this film is a great combination of the epic and intimate qualities of his entire opus.

Default A Passage To India

Has anyone seen this movie yet? It would be a blind buy for me, but it has gotten good reviews and the movie is suppossed to be very good as well. I would just like some feedback on the movie itself, as well as the PQ/AQ if anyone has seen the Blu-Ray.

It is on its way to me. I was the movie once, but it was awhile back. Anyways, it is supposed to have a very good story.

Undoubtedly a beautiful film with great performances and a thought provoking story. Will be a definite purchase for me at some time in the near future - hoping it gets rolled into a deal or two.

I haven't seen this yet, but I've read nothing but good stuff about the film, so it's on my future purchase list.

I watched "A Passage to India" late one night on TCM, and I thought that the movie was really good. Seeing as how it was David Lean's final film, it ranks right up there with "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago"! I thought that the underrated Judy Davis really stood out in this movie, but it was such a pity that she didn't win the Best Actress Oscar that year. I haven't gotten the Blu-ray yet, but my reaction about the movie should be reason enough for you to have it in your collection. I hope you enjoy the movie, JasonR. I know I will again in a couple of days!

yes

and its as close to Lawrence Of Arabia and Dr Zhivago as Cindy Lauper is to Audrey Hepburn

transfer wise it cant be faulted, but its one of the weaker of Leans films

Saying it is one of Lean's weaker films is like saying it one of the Beatles worse selling albums.

It may not be as good LOA, Zhivago, or Bridge on the River Kwai but is a multiple oscar winner for good reason.
