Default Remastered Blu Rays that still use the old master on iTunes.

What 1080p iTunes movies use the remastered version and which still use the old master? I've compared a few remastered blu ray's to the version on iTunes and sometimes iTunes uses the remaster but mostly not. For instance:

- The Good, the bad and the ugly (non remastered version)
- Fargo (non remastered version)
- Rain Man (remastered version)
- Blazing Saddles (remastered version)
- In the heat of the night (non remastered version)
- Patton (non remastered version)
- Out of Africa (non remastered version)

Before buying I would like to know which version I'm buying. So if anybody knows more titles this is the thread for it!

Good idea!

I can’t speak for the Blu-ray of Tin Cup, but going by reviews it is a really nice remaster. I bought the iTunes HD version in a recent sale (UK store) and out looked fine but old in terms of the master. I’d be very surprised if it’s the remastered Warner Archive master.

Oh yes and Antz is another one. Great Blu-ray release and looks absolutely awful on iTunes (again UK store). Looks SD basically, it’s horribly soft.

Does Hardcore use the same transfer as the US and UK Blu-rays?
(Yes, all providers use the same 4k sourced transfer)

Does Maniac have Maniac 2 as it's extra? Is it remastered?
(See The Killing)

Is Ichi the Killer uncut and remastered?
(As Ichi the Killer lists Well Go as the provider, it is uncut and utilizes the same 4k transfer like their 2017 Blu-Ray release)

Does Day of the Jackal uses the same master as the Arrow blu-ray?
(Arrow's Day of the Jackal BD uses an HD master created by Universal, therefore all streaming versions and Blu-Ray versions throughout the world use the same transfer with differences in compression)

Does anyone have screenshot comparison for Silence of the Lambs 4K iTunes vs Criterion BD?
(not sure if this link still works, but here ya go https://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/134739)

Does Brazil iTunes use the master and cut used in the Universal BD?
(Yes, all providers use the same US theatrical cut transfer as the Universal BD)

Is Touch of Evil in iTunes the Reconstructed Version? (Theatrical cut in widescreen)
If not, then where else (other than purchasing Blu-rays) can I find this version? (If you have Movies Anywhere linked with this title to other providers, possibly Vudu or the MA app)

I want to know if the iTunes version of The Terminator, Henry: PoaSK, Robocop, Fargo, Memento, and Maniac match the screencaps of the remastered version. (The Terminator, Fargo, and Robocop are the same transfers as the Remastered BDs. Maniac is the older HD transfer seen on the original Blue Underground BD. Henry: PoaSK is the 4k master seen on the Dark Sky Films 30th Anniversary Edition. The version of Memento with Samuel Goldwyn as the provider is the same transfer as the remastered Lionsgate BD and the 2017 Samuel Goldwyn MOD BD)

I want to know if iTunes version of The Descent match the AVC/VC-1 version on caps-a-holic, the color timing is very different from the MPEG-2 version. (Not 100% sure on this one, but I imagine Itunes and all streaming providers are probably using the alt HD master seen on the AVC BD)

Also, what master does the International version of Leon and the special edition of Terminator 2 uses? (Since the International Cut of Leon isn't 4k being it's an extra, i'm certain it's on the older HD master used on the 2009 Sony BD as well as all other BDs worldwide. The SE cut of Terminator 2 on Itunes is said to be the older HD master, but not the same one as the Skynet BD as the streaming version has grain and the TriStar logo at the start)
TLDR:
Hardcore and Day of the Jackal use the same transfer as the US/UK BDs.
Ichi the Killer, The Terminator, Fargo (contradicting OP), Robocop (not sure if its 2014 MGM or 2019 Arrow, but probably 2014 MGM), Henry: PoaSK, and Memento are remastered.
Maniac is from an older master and Leon: The Professional International Cut and Terminator 2 SE are presumably an older master as well.

I'm pretty sure that Fargo and Robocop are not the remastered version. I've compared both to the remastered blu ray. And some more titles:

- The apartment (non remastered version)
- Some like it hot (non remastered version)
- Being there (non remastered version)
- Blue Velvet (non remastered version)
- Do the right thing (non remastered version)
- Dressed to kill (non remastered version)
- Manhunter (non remastered version)
- 12 Monkeys (non remastered version)
- Midnight Run (non remastered version)

I'm going to have to disagree on Patton. That is the 2012 remaster. It's just itunes 2012 softness. https://ibb.co/album/4mMSwQ Also if you pull out the 2008 version for that scene it's night and day.

I've compared them two years ago I think. So maybe they have changed by now! So hopefully some more will change soon.

Compared Belle de Jour yesterday from the UK store. Definitely not the new Studio Canal remaster.

The Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! thread discusses the use of DNR on the recent Blu-ray release versus no DNR on iTunes. The consensus seems to be no DNR is more faithful to the original, even if the picture quality might not be as nice.

That would be an interesting topic. iTunes movies that have 'better' image quality than the remastered blu rays. But I guess not too many. Not a fan of DNR myself although some prefer the DNR version of Scooby-Doo.

Anyone know if Four Weddings and a Funeral is the remaster? Cover art does not match the iTunes art so I am guessing no.

I'd like to know as well. I just looked at my Prime version, and it sure looks unremastered. If the Apple one is remastered, I'll buy it there for $4.99.

For a lot of classic movies, I’ve noticed that the new master will be on Movies Anywhere and all other sources use an older one. The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Dracula (1931) are two off the top of my head. I would go there as a point of reference for most films (not Paramount and others obviously).
