Criterion All That Jazz (1979)

Quote:
The preternaturally gifted director and choreographer Bob Fosse turned the camera on his own life for this madly imaginative, self-excoriating musical masterpiece. Roy Scheider gives the performance of his career as Joe Gideon, whose exhausting work schedule—mounting a Broadway production by day and editing his latest movie at night—and routine of amphetamines, booze, and sex are putting his health at serious risk. Fosse burrows into Gideon’s (and his own) mind, rendering his interior world as phantasmagoric spectacle. Assembled with visionary editing that makes dance come alive on-screen as never before, and overflowing with sublime footwork by the likes of Ben Vereen, Leland Palmer, and the awesomely leggy Ann Reinking, All That Jazz pushes the musical genre to personal depths and virtuosic aesthetic heights.
Quote:

New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed 3.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Two audio commentaries: a feature-length one with editor Alan Heim and a scene-specific one with actor Roy Scheider
Razzle-Dazzle, a new video essay on the film by critic Matt Zoller Seitz
Episode from 1980 of the television talk show Tomorrow, featuring director Bob Fosse and choreographer Agnes de Mille
New interview with Heim
New interview with Fosse biographer Sam Wasson
Interview excerpts and footage from the set, featuring Fosse and Scheider
Portrait of a Choreographer, a 2007 documentary on Fosse
The Soundtrack: Perverting the Standards, a 2007 documentary about the music in the film
Interview from 2007 with George Benson about his song “On Broadway,” which opens the film
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by theater critic Hilton Als
More!
[Show spoiler]I believe that James Finn (of Fox) mentioned someting about blu-ray release, almost a year ago. Well, never mind that now, as The Hollywood Reporter confirmed a blu-ray release.

Quote:
The 4K restoration of All That Jazz will be used as the master for an upcoming Blu-Ray release, and 4K Digital Cinema Package (the digital equivalent of a film print) will be created for repertory cinemas.
Full story on restoration here

I'd miss this info, if it weren't for Penton-Man, So, credit goes to him.

Byw, my guess for this release is sometime next year; to coincide with 35th Anniversary of the movie.

It's always good to see more classic musicals coming to Blu-ray. I wasn't familiar with Bob Fosse until I recently wanted one of his other films, Cabaret, so I'll definitely be excited to see All That Jazz on Blu-ray.

Interesting. I've never seen this before but I picked the DVD up the other day at HMV because I had to buy a second title to get a 2 for $10 deal.

This movie creeped me out for some reason. It is well made though and I will pick it up just to get over the fear.

There's a complete box set on dvd that was put out by Toho in the late nineties but each film only has the Japanese soundtrack and no subtitles.

+1

That scene in the hospital, where they showed, in graphic detail, an actual triple bypass heart surgery.

It made me sick to my stomach and to this day, I make it a point to skip over that scene,
whenever I watch my DVD copy.

With that being said, I will purchase the 4K restoration on Blu-ray, because it is a great movie.
I just hope they pay special attention to the spectacular soundtrack.
As they say, "it's worth the price of admission."

It was probably the graphic bypass heart surgery scene.

This will be coming from Fox Japan on January 9th, 2019. It might be a Japanese exclusive, and it might end up being region locked (there is precedent for both from Fox Japan), but it apparently will have an English: DTS-HD MA 5.1 track, and no extras:

Totally. I threw it on to watch a few minutes (something about seeing Scheider rejuvenates me -- I've seen Cohen & Tate an indefensible number of times) and ended up watching the whole thing. It's mesmerizing.

"All That Jazz" is easily one of my favorite Criterion blind buys. Roy Scheider, the editing, and dance sequences are just majestic.

I've pretty much liked Roy Scheider is anything he's done. Jaws is my favorite movie of all time so I know that has something to do with it but it's not just that. Scheider just had a great charismatic quality that made him likeable. He seemed like the kind of guy that you'd love to have for a friend, an Uncle, a dad.... etc.

All That Jazz is one of his crowning achievements for sure

Jaws is a top 5 movie for me and I love Sorcerer, Marathon Man and The Seven Up's, I find myself going back to movies like Still Of The Night, Last Embrace and 52 Pick Up more often than i might otherwise just because of Scheider. Hes just flat out awesome

ALL THAT JAZZ is one of the best films of the '70s, IMO, and the Criterion BD is a dream come true. It looks and sounds amazing.

Bob Fosse was one of the finest American filmmakers of all time. SWEET CHARITY, CABARET, LENNY, ALL THAT JAZZ and STAR 80 are all incredible, to varying degrees (the last three listed are my favorites). Twilight Time's BD of LENNY is very nice (not sure if it's still in print), and STAR 80 is in desperate need of a BD release. I really hope Criterion gets around to that one, especially since they've been churning out older Warner titles.
