Angry DVD's Lost Data & Damaged Discs!

Hi just wanted to post this. I have a situation, I am loosing DVD's in my collection by doing nothing, here are some picture of my damaged DVD's

Can someone care to explain why is this happening.
I think it is two things:

1. Humidity.
2. Cheap quality Discs.

Of some of my discs they look fine but when I put it in a DVD reader and it docent play, so that's probably the data corrupted.

Hope someone here knows more about this problem, thank God that I have already backed up all of my DVD collection in a external Hard Drive so I still preserve the uncompressed data

Note: Most of the discs are from Warner Brothers, and both are from 2006-2007 releases.

BTW I have DVD discs that are 4 years older than the ones that I am showing and they play fine........... I don't get it?
With Blu-rays I still haven't had that problem.

That looks nasty! I'd contact Warner Bros. and see what they say. How are you DVDs stored? are they in their cases or folders?

The only thing I can think of is that if they're in rooms with high contrasts in temperature and humidity that that is the problem but it looks like they've reacted against something they're in contact with.

Interesting... I remember many complaints of "disc rot" for Warner HD-DVDs which were produced in those exact years.

Warner's cheapness is probably the reason for this and not the format as such.

Yikes. That's weird. I've never experienced DVD rot or anything. I've still got some of my earliest DVDs, from 1998, and they still play like they're brand new.

It has to be the temperature, but the cheap material has something to do with that, becasue all of DVD would have been in the exact same conditions,

If the glue that binds the two substrates together has started to fail and/or crack then oxidation of the reflective layer will begin.

Sure

Still running it seems. (Less selection than I remember. I guess it never offered all that many. )

The DVDs in question might just be isolated cases due to their poor manufacturing but if you don't have one it might be worth investing in a dehumidifier for that room or at least getting a device to measure the levels.

That is very strange...out of all the things in a house, i would think there's alot more things with a worse threshold to humity then a DVD. Just wondering, those little dots on the disc, can u feel them, are they raised up on the surface or does it feel like the surface has chipped off? I'm just really curious, never seen this ever!

I have some dvds that don't have a single mark/scratch on them & have playing issues, strangely enough they played perfectly fine years ago when I first watched them. the Dukes of Hazzard seasons (the double sided discs) & James Bond 007 Collection (4 seperate boxed volumes, numerous discs from each volume just won't play or they will play briefly then freeze up)

Just some strange silly perhaps even stupid questions...
Is it odd that some dvds will play on one player/computer & you go play it on a different player & disc freezes up? Problem with the disc or the player or what?

It's not uncommon for one DVD player or drive to play a disc whilst others will not. I have a few DVD drives in my PC and depending on the disc (I have a few data discs that are badly scratched) you can get varying results. I think it depends on drive and laser wear in some circumstances. A heavily used drive near the end of it's life won't be able to play discs as well as a new drive. Drive speed can be a factor too you can get different results by reading the discs faster or slower (which can help with data discs).

I recently bought the Stargate SG-1 set and one of the volumes is faulty, my PC drives just skip ahead past the fault into the next chapter but my standalone players all crash when they hit the authoring fault.

I have been having problems with my Fox DVDs lately. Mostly shows like Buffy and Angel where I have been watching them for years but now the player says there is no data on the disc.

have you tried a different player? could very well be a bad laser

Yep some drives will read the data on some Dvd's but if it fails that means the data is corrupted. I have over 70's dvd's in my collection and I decided to buy a 3gb external Hard Drive and decrypt all of them.

But is really annoying to pay for something and have to throw it away because of the cheap materials used by those ppl (WB, Fox, etc). I am all against having your movie collection on a HD or the Clouds, I like to buy my movies with the special features!

Note: I noticed that the discs specially WB that had the problem are those made from 2005-2008
