I have heard of that.. as bad as that sounds, I have actually played a phantom once at E3 a couple years back. That system died though as well, at least last I heard.

Sega was not killed by ps2, they killed themselves. It started w/ the saturn. They had bad marketing and created bad relations w/ stores. Such as KB toys and WM. After they suddenly quit making the saturn for the dreamcast. Companies were afraid they would do it again........and so now they don't make consoles. However I have always wanted a dreamcast after one of my friends had one. Finally picked one up last summer at a garage sale for $15. It came w/ like 5 games, controller, and a vmu. Always have loved the crazy taxi games and virtua tennis for this system.

Sega Saturn came out, then 1 year later PS1 came and stole the market. At that point Sega pondered going into strictly publishing games for consoles, and tossing plans for the future release of Sega Dreamcast. They decided to go forward and release the Dreamcast and was mildly successful until again 1 year later, the PS2 came and took over the gaming market.
At that point all future plans for another console release were tossed out, and Sega became a publisher for all consoles. The only company That still wants to release a new console believe it or not, is Atari. Though they have only said that they "want to", they have never said if the will or not, or even if something was in the works.... Last edited by BTS11; 01-21-2008 at 07:18 AM. |

I played my Dreamcast yesterday.
I remember laughing about it when it came out because it was about $300 (If I remember correctly) which I though was way too much for a game machine. I bought one of the last ones for $49.99 because I couldn't get enough of Virtua Tennis. I paid $599 for my Ps3 without thinking twice but at the time (nov 06) I was just buying the cheapest Blu Ray player available. (Aside from the 20GB system which would have also been an option.) -Brian |

I am a huge Sega fan, and still regularly use my Dreamcast. Sega has no plans to enter the home console market as a manufacturer again for the foreseeable future.
Sega is the top arcade game manufacturer, and the Dreamcast is the home variation of its NAOMI arcade platform, with identical processors but less memory. The Dreamcast was/is a phenomenal system, being the first console with built-in online capabilities and 128 bit processing. The Dreamcast benefited from being designed with the NAOMI arcade board by receiving direct conversions of top arcade games including Crazy Taxi 1&2, Virtua Tennis 1&2, Ferrari F355 Challenge, Samba De Amigo, Dead or Alive 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, House of the Dead 2, 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker, Border Down, SNK Vs Capcom 2, Project Justice, and Power Stone 1 & 2. The Dreamcast still holds the record for the single biggest console launch day in US history (9/9/99), with 300,000 pre-ordered consoles and 225,000 retail sails in the first day. Unfortunately, that sales momentum soon slowed as Sony began to hype the upcoming PS2, which didn't go on sale until March, 2000. At the time of Dreamcast's launch Sega had sustained considerable losses, debt and increased consumer frustration from the failed launches of Saturn, as well as Sega CD, and 32X which were expansion modules for the Genesis. The only chance Sega had to succeed with Dreamcast was with Wii type sales numbers. Upon it's release the PS2 overtook the Dreamcast in sales, with Nintendo's N64 sitting in 3rd place. When news came that Microsoft was readying the original XBox for release, and Nintendo was preparing the GameCube, Sega decided to exit the hardware end of the market and focus it's efforts as a 3rd party software developer and publisher. Unfortunately, Sega is still paying the price of it's earlier mistakes. Sammy, which is a big pachinko game manufacturer in Japan, acquired a controlling share of Sega a few years ago. This was a bit of a semi-hostile takeover, because Sega had earlier brokenb off merger talks with Sammy. Sega Sammy was the result, and it prompted a huge shuffling within all of Sega's famed development studios such as AM2, Sonic Team, WOW, and others. Key developers have left Sega's dev teams, and a lot of franchises, most notable Sonic, have suffered. During this period Sega also sold it's 2K Sports divisions, including NBA 2K and NFL 2K developer Visual Concepts to Take-Two Interactive. The Sega games and developers we see today, with just a few exceptions such as AM2 (Virtua Fighter, Shenmue, F355 Challenge), are just a shell of their former selves. The Dreamcast was a phenomenal machine, but for Sega's sake I hope they never release another console and instead focus on game development. If they can get the quality and variety of their work to match what they were doing in the late '90's, and focus it on the PS3, I'd be a very happy person. |

Sega can drop dead as far as I'm concerned! It's bad enough that they refused to include online play for Virtua Tennis and Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3 while the 360 got it. Now they say they have no plans to patch the PS3 version of VF5 for all of the fixes/improvements that the 360 owners are enjoying.
