Warner Bros Rating the Harry Potter Franchise

I’ve recently rewatched all the HP films. I’m a fan of the franchise from a cinematic standpoint as I’ve only read one book many years ago.

Order, Stone and Chamber are my least favourite but the rest I rate a minimum of 3 out of 5. I’ve ranked the films favourite to least.

Goblet of Fire (4) is easily the worst movie - they changed so much of what made the book amazing. 5 is slightly better, but not much. The 5th book is the longest and while I enjoy the film it’s ranked where it is because they cut out 95 percent of the book.

Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets are the only acceptable movies.

Yeah it’s pretty interesting. The film version of Goblet of Fire almost comes off as a highlight reel of all the ‘best’ (read: action) stuff from the book but leaves out all the intriguing background stuff in favour of action beats. It’s a difficult book to adapt thanks to it’s fragmented, almost video game nature, but the film falls well into the traps.

But when it comes to Order of the Phoenix, I actually think it succeeds far more by scrapping a large portion of the filler and background set up by simply homing in on the central characters and just letting the film play out from their perspective. It’s just a shame that Half-Blood Prince winds up coming across a bit dramatically inert due to getting overstuffed with bringing back fan moments missed out in the previous film.

Azkaban is pretty great. The rest are average (Deathly Hallowes) to unwatchable (Chamber of Secrets).

I enjoyed all of the films. I grew up watching them. I've read the books too, but sadly, don't remember them much to rank them. All I remember is the Order of the Phoenix book being more enjoyable than the movie.

1. Half-Blood Prince
2. Deathly Hallows: Part 2
3. Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Order of the Phoenix
5. Chamber of Secrets
6. Deathly Hallows: Part 1
7. Philosopher's Stone
8. Goblet of Fire

This thread comes at a perfect time because I just received the UHD collection in the mail and I’m fairly overdue for a series re-watch. My list will be updated afterwards, but for now, here’s where I currently stand:

1. Deathly Hallows Part 2
2. Prisoner of Azkaban
3. Deathly Hallows Part 1
4. Goblet of Fire
5. Order of the Phoenix
6. Chamber of Secrets
7. Half-Blood Prince
8. Philosopher’s Stone

The last 200ish pages are solid, it's just a slog to get there.

I'm actually in the process of rewatching these and have Prisoner of Azkaban on right now. They're all fun movies but I prefer the earlier ones with more time spent around the school.

Chamber of Secrets is probably my favourite.

Chamber of Secrets is my favorite Harry Potter movie and I couldn't care less that I seem to be the only one.

Absolutely. But by this time Rowling was a megastar and for the novels at least, nobody could say no to her.

The last 3 books are decent but in some ways are poorly written.

Gosh, I'd have to disagree. It's close to my favorite book. I love all the extra background. But I was a kid in the midst of Potter book mania. None of us who read the book the week it came out were unhappy with the length or pace.

In fact, as I sat there reading it in 2003 as a young high schooler after buying it at midnight in my Potter costume, I wished it were longer. Lol. Probably read it a dozen times at least.

I was Potter mad when I was a kid. I was nine when Order of the Phoenix came out and I remember I finished it quicker than anybody else in my class. It might even be my favourite book in the series, which is weird because the adaptation is my least favourite film.

I love the film, still one of those weird Potterheads who love all the films to varying degrees except the Fantastic Beasts spin-offs and the Christopher Columbus turns.
