Thumbs up Star trek by paramount & J.J. Abrams in theatres Xmas '08

Forgot to put it in my Cloverfield thread. Saw a preview for a new trek movie made by paramount, bad robot, and J.J. Abrams. Says it's coming christmas '08. I honestly don't care for Star Trek, but I know some of you will be excited to hear that.

As much as I am a fan of Star Trek, I am very dissapointed that some of my most favorite movies and tv shows are and/or will be released in the inferior, dead in the water, format

(But hopefully, till this December, Paramount will abandon their wicked ways )

I don't think Paramount will still be supporting HD-DEAD exclusively by 2009, because that movie will probably not be released in HD until at least March or later of next year.

Grumble, grumble, grumble...

I wish they'd just leave Trek's past alone already... First Enterprise (I don't care how much it "improved", it still messed with Trek's past) and now this. If they want to make good Trek, take a look at Peter David's "New Frontier" book series. THAT would be an awesome Star Trek series that I'd want to go see!

As for this train wreck waiting to happen, I'll be washing my hair...

I'm sorry, but since Voyager was the only Trek on TV I have been quite disappointed with the way the franchise has been handled. If you're excited about this film, more power to you!

Hardly anyone is looking forward to this train wreck.

Even more so since it's being written by the clowns that wrote Bayformers.

I am very much looking forward to it. I am a fan of the more modern Trek series (TNG, Voyager, Enterprise), but was never a huge fan of the original series (it was before my time).
I think it will be interesting to see it re-imagined in a more contemporary way and I like a lot of the cast, Zachary Quinto for instance from Heroes and Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead.

Agreed. I wasn't a fan of the original series either but I'm willing to give this re-imagining a chance. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Kirk & Spock during their academy days. Could be interesting.

It will very likely be a blasphemous abomination in need of burning

Fortunately, unlike Galactica there are a huge army of torch and pitchfork wielders who will do something about it

That being said, Nimoy and Takei are happy with it, so I'll wait to buy the gas until the next day

I would have to say Enterprise dealt heavily with time travel in the first 3 seasons. Once time travel is declared all bets are off, anything can happen.

For example Enterprise had Borg, but because of TNG movie First Contact where the smaller Borg ship blew up in the past. End result: Frozen Borg bodies in the past, like a ripple.

After Gene Roddenbuys Death I don't know if you can consider anything canon anymrore. I don't know if he would have approved of this type of prequel. I hope they have Capt. Christopher Pike in it!

Agreed. He should be in command of the Enterprise, at least at the start (depending on how the time line lines up).

That's what I'm most afraid of. I'm afraid that at the end of the film they're going to completely ignore what's already been established so that the people who didn't understand/appreciate the Original Series will be happy. This could all easily be resolved by simply creating a new series (*cough cough* NEW FRONTIER *cough*) and leaving the past canon alone.

Well, I hear from them that they are working hard to respect canon, but they wanted to start from the VERY beginning. (There are even flashback scenes with Winona Kirk pregnant with him..played by Jennifer Morrison from "House")

I think they had to go that far back...jettison the casual movie-goers notion that they needed to have seen all 700 hrs of Trek to get it. And if the story is good...a casual movie goer will go try because they are such a part of pop culture that they know the basics about them. The goal of the story is to make that all they need to know.

And to recapture some of the adventure of Trek. Haven't felt that from it in years.

Yeah, Voyager and Enterprise are my faves of the ST franchise too, and I've seen every episode of every series in the ST franchise (and all the movies to date).
