Universal Studios The Lodge (2019)

NEON, by way of Universal, will be releasing The Lodge (2019) on Blu-ray on May 5th. Personally, I have mixed feelings on the film. It offers up excellent atmosphere, builds tension nicely, and has a great performance from Riley Keough, but has a very contrived twist that really hurts the film. The BD does not appear to have any extras besides trailers unfortunately.

Quote:
During a family retreat to a remote winter cabin over the holidays, the father is forced to abruptly depart for work, leaving his two children in the care of his new girlfriend, Grace. Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge as terrifying events summon specters from Grace's dark past.

I would say there are some aspects of it that reminded me of Hereditary for sure, so I'd say if you liked that one, you'd probably like this.

Hereditary and Midsommar were much better imo (I've not see the The VVitch) but this was still enjoyable. Not one I'll be rewatching or buying, though.

I saw the trailer for this and thought it looked intriguing, but I forgot the title. When The Turning came out, I thought it was this film since they appear to have somewhat similar premises (they're both horror films about two children in the care of an adult women in an isolated location). Thankfully I didn't go see that (I heard it was awful). Hopefully this was much better.

Excellent. I was hoping it would get a Blu-ray release in the US. I'll be getting the French BD on April 16th, but I'll get the US release too. I didn't have the opportunity to see the film in the theater, so I really can't wait.

I actually liked this film more than Hereditary—possibly more than Midsommar, too. I think the reason I preferred it to Hereditary was mainly because it was less frenetic and more subdued, especially in the final act. Hereditary sort of lost me in the last 20 minutes. I am also a sucker for a good religious-themed horror movie, and this one delivered in that regard. I saw it twice in theaters. It's a very dark (literally and thematically), atmospheric film. The acting was also fantastic from everyone involved. Will definitely be buying this.

I liked Goodnight Mommy but this looked way better than that, so I'm looking forward to this.
But I can't help but feel that Universal are doing certain movies dirty. This and Piercing, another genre movie I was looking forward to, have no features. I know the directors don't really do that when looking at their previous work, but I feel like even the addition of trailers and promotional stuff would be at least something.

This one was fantastically shot, acted, written and executed and the experience was absolutely soul gutting. I don’t think I’ll ever watch it again.

Like the energy at the theater after it ended was eerie and downright grim

The amazon.com preorder is back up for May 5.

Unfortunately, the French Blu-ray, which was scheduled for April 16, is now unavailable.

I felt the same way about Hereditary. It was really effective until the final 20 minutes. The Lodge remains subdued and extremely intense and was more effective in the end by not going off the rails.

I've only seen Hereditary once in the theater. I'll give it another chance sometime to see how I feel about the ending.
[Show spoiler]Cult stuff always is pretty hokey for me, and add in the crazy overt supernatural stuff ending with the mom's floating headless body and it lost me, when it was really intense and believable prior to that point.
