And promptly over-read as fast as it was announced.
WB isn't dumping Physical media any more than the Last WBShop sale was the end of WAC. They are rearranging deck chairs, what used to flow through here will now flow through there, labels may have new names on it, but nothing in the announcement say Warner is abandoning physical media |

Nope. From Jerry Beck on the Cartoon Research Facebook page, in response to his comments going viral:
"Wow – I blew up the internet! It looks like a little response I made to a cartoon fan wondering if Daffy or Tweety’s anniversary would be celebrated on DVD or blu-ray has blown up and gone viral. First of all: anyone claiming that Warner Bros. is planning to phase out DVD and Blu-ray beginning in 2022 has taken my words and blown them way way out of context. Secondly, I do not work for Warner Bros. - I occasionally work freelance as a writer or consultant to their home video group. I know nothing about the inner workings of that department. A few days ago I was asked a few questions by anxious fans worried about the future of physical media – and unfortunately, from my point of view, I didn’t have anything new to report. Warner’s IS restoring their classic cartoons for HBO-Max (and to air on MeTV) and its obvious that the streaming service is where the Warner cartoon library will live on for the time being. But, I repeat, I do not know anything about what’s going on concerning their Home Video department. I do know that DVDs and blu-rays will continue to be produced, and that department still exists. All we can do is hope that they will continue to release their cartoon shorts on physical media. That’s all I know – that’s all I can say about this matter." |

I live in Canada and so HBO Max isn’t a thing here. There are HD versions of shows on HBO Max that haven’t been released on blu ray & I honestly don’t know if they ever will. Superman The Animated Series is a big one. That show is just begging to be released on blu ray but last month HBO MaX released in it in HD with no blu ray release announced.
Do people not see the difference between streaming & physical media, or do they just not care? I have a 4K TV and it took me a few months to buy a 4K player, so I streamed 4K titles in the meantime and was impressed with what I saw. Then I got the physical player & discs and the difference isn’t small. Watching Star Wars on Disney+ compared to Star Wars on UHD is quite different. The compression of streaming is always going to be an issue. Then again a few friends of mine just don’t care about 4K at all. Some people just don’t see a difference. To them switching from VHS to DVD and DVD to blu ray was noticeable but from blu ray to 4K...I don’t see the same enthusiasm. I never cared for 3D so when 3D blu ray stopped being a thing I didn’t care. But is the market for 4K physical media really that big? Or is it a niche? Or a niche within a niche? Do we know how 4K titles are selling compared to DVD/Blu Ray? I wonder...Did blu ray ever over take DVD in sales? Like when a movie such as, I don’t know, Tenet for example, do more blu ray copies sell than DVD’s? You’d think the companies would stop releasing things separately since physical media is in such a bind at the moment. Release the 4K/Blu & DVD in the same set. That way all the formats get supported. Or maybe just blu ray/4K. Most 4K sets come with a blu ray anyways, so why not stop individually released titles? |
