The movie and Reflection are also on Blu-ray in Japan, and have English subtitles on them in addition to the (not very well-received) English dubs (Trust & Betrayal also has the dub on it), but are a bit harder to find as they're OOP. Anyway, as for the series itself, Japan last got a DVD box in December 2006, and the series has been OOP there ever since. I doubt we'll get the TV series on Blu-ray, especially given it's Aniplex who released the discs in Japan. They don't do Blu-ray boxes for catalog content often, it's typically done to promote something. They've yet to do a Blu-ray box for an SD series that is around Rurouni Kenshin's length.

There's still love for this franchise since they make live action movies and do live stage plays based on it. So there might be hope that the older series will make it to bluray one day. If anything, I still hold out hope for a new series that finally animated the original ending manga arc...

Rurouni Kenshin volume 1 was the first anime DVD I ever bought, and that was back in 2001 from Suncoast back when it was 4 episodes for $30. I still have it but would love to upgrade if an upgrade will ever occur. Despite all that's happened with Watsuki, Kenshin is my favorite series after all these years. There have been more obscure shows that received remasters (albeit some DNRed to death), but at least we got the OVAs and movie released on Blu.
Honestly, I've given up on the idea of the TV series getting re-released at this point. Part of me regrets not picking up the three season box sets, but they were rather pricey for me back then especially since I already owned the DVDs with the canon episodes. Edit: I just did an eBay search and am surprised how affordable the full series is. $50 for everything isn't so bad. Hmm... |

Beware that look-a-like bootlegs are everywhere.

I'd look for what's known as a Versapak case, they're the same thickness as stackpaks.

Spain has a remastered DVD release (by Selecta Visión), but it's actually just the footage DNR'd so you might as well go for the Japanese DVDs instead if you want the current best quality it can be.
By the way, I remember watching the series in TV and it being called "Samurai X", but the original Rurouni Kenshin sounds way better. |

More than likely. It’s strangely higher quality than the crappy Chinese bootlegs I’m used to seeing. I immediately remembered why I didn’t get the last discs. Those filler arcs were bad. Just thinking about them gives me nightmares.

I got tricked by a Rurouni Kenshin complete series bootleg back in 2014. This was when these identical bootlegs were still new. Think I paid about $100 for it back then. I got it in hand and immediately knew it was a bootleg but had no other way to watch Kenshin, so I had to settle. Eventually I found legit copies of season 1 and 2 about two years ago from a member here.
