It's WB, right? If so, it'll see a UHD release. Hopefully with the IMAX scenes in 16:9. So far we've gotten screwed on that with Catching Fire and Sully(although the Blu-ray got screwed there too).

Seems like a little too soon for this announcement. I am very curious about Nolan's decisions with HDR...

The movie is basically IMAX so no Dolby Vision of course... Nolan is a film purist, he won't allow a HDR re-grading to make it pop more...

Ah, but Nolan didn't stiff us with the IMAX stuff on the Blu-rays of TDK, TDKR and Interstellar, so I think Dunkirk's UHD will be just fine...and could well end up being one of the best discs yet released on the format, given that the movie was shot on a mix of vertical and horizontal 65mm.

IMAX have their own version of HDR though....

And a UHD of this was always on the cards, it just depends whether Nolan will indeed go for an HDR grade, although it wouldn't actually be a "re-grade" after the fact if it's done during the usual post-production workflow.

I think it will have HDR, as although this movie isn't some kind of neon-drenched explosion of colour (paging John Wick) it could definitely benefit from what HDR brings in regards to highlight/lowlight detail, e.g. the flying scenes. Nolan may love film to death but he's no luddite either, and he knows that home video never really comes close to the majesty of what 15/70 can do. But if he's shown how UHD can help to bring a bit more of film's range & clarity into homes then I think he'll be convinced.

More than any other Nolan movie, I want Interstellar on UHD. Like right now.

I'd rather they take their time with the Batman trilogy and properly remaster the first two. I don't care what they do with the third one lol

Interstellar would be great as well! I have the same feelings about Batman. Re-do 1/2... Rises can go suck an egg. I haven't wasted my time with that one since opening weekend.

Well the color grading of the TDK Blu-ray was different than the prologue as well as the trailers. I believe it was because the IMAX master was used and it had a harsh look compared to the standard theatrical master. Agreed, the UHD would still look better regardless.

I would be amazed if Nolan didn't want HDR. As Geoff said, film has a far higher dynamic range and color gamut (especially 15/70 IMAX film) than what you get with Rec 709 aka SDR for Blu-ray. I'm very much a film purist and HDR is very exciting for me for that reason.

I was drooling over the 15/70 trailer for this film when I saw Rogue One at my local IMAX, and I'm sure this will be a killer UHD release provided Warner doesn't use the DMR'd 5/70 footage. Considering that this only happened with TDK and not any of his subsequent movies with partial IMAX footage, we should be set for something special indeed.

Nolan creates the final mix with film projection in mind and film projection is stricly 5.1:

5.1 Dolby Digital for 35mm, Datasat for 5/70 and Uncompressed DTAC for IMAX 15/70

Technically SDR and Rec.709 are not related. You can encode BT.2020 at 10 bit without applying HDR

SDR 2020 is part of the UHD Blu spec for sure...but no-one's doing it. IIRC Koch even said that there was no way to do it (presumably meaning current mastering and/or encoding tools) when asked about their 4K SDR 709 presentation of The Neon Demon.

For whatever reasons, there seems to be no way to extricate one from the other so these discs are either SDR 709 or HDR 2020. And I'd MUCH rather have a tasteful HDR 2020 version of Dunkirk than an SDR 709 version.
