Terrence Malick’s ‘Tree of Life’ Gets Longer Criterion Version

Terrence Malick has secretly been working on an extended version of “The Tree of Life,” which will be included by the Criterion Collection as a supplement to an enhanced special-edition Blu-ray and DVD release later this year.

The film, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, has grown 50 minutes of new branches — although roots might be a better metaphor, since the additional material focuses primarily on the lives of the O’Brien family (characters played by Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain) and the backstory of Jack (Sean Penn), whose search for meaning in the wake of his brother’s death drives a transcendental quest unlike any previously depicted on film.

“Terry doesn’t see this as a director’s cut,” says Criterion president Peter Becker, who insists that the 139-minute theatrical version is the official “director’s cut” and remains the centerpiece of the Blu-Ray edition. “It’s a fresh view of the film that has a different rhythm and a different balance.

....

As cinephiles’ imaginations race, it’s important to note: The expanded 188-minute cut doesn’t contain more effects shots, and the epic creation sequence remains untouched. But it restores material that Malick was exploring for the version that was shown in Cannes, including specific events and characters that were referenced only elliptically in the original film. Audiences will get specific insights into Mr. O’Brien’s painful upbringing, meet members of Mrs. O’Brien’s extended family, and witness a major natural catastrophe that serves as a kind of centerpiece for what Becker has been calling “the new version.”

At this stage, no theatrical release is planned. Criterion holds only home-video rights, “but Fox has been very supportive,” Becker says, “and we’ll see what the audiences demand.”

Clue breakdown: Someone is holding a tray of Life cereal. Tray = Tree = Tree of Life

Hope they knock the case artwork out of the park.

...was a little disappointed by what they did with Badlands.

Don't think this is it at all.

Here's Your Life by Jan Troell.

IMDB has this posted :

Jan Troell directed Everlasting Moments that's been released by Criterion.

If true. I really hope it's the theatrical & supposed longer cut. And not a carbon copy of the already excellent Fox disc, with slightly more extras.

I love extras but for me Tree of Life is a film that really doesn't need any at all.

So you think the tray is there for no reason? Nothing is there without reason in these types of clues, it's The Tree of Life, i guarantee it

I just don't see Criterion releasing it. And I think it's too obvious for Tree of Life. A tray is someone serving something. Handing them something. Aka "Here's Your Life".

They could present life cereal in any number of ways to someone, the fact that it's a tray is significant. Criterion are also keen on releasing Malick's work. They have Badlands, Days of Heaven, and The Thin Red Line released, and they'll be releasing The New World later this year as well. Time will tell of course, but I'd be shocked if TToL wasn't released

Agreed, it's more likely the Troell film.

Or, possibly, a double hint for both films. But With Malick working on TWO unreleased new features, I doubt he had the time to finalize the longer cut of Tree of Life.

Maybe they will include the super mega long cut Malick made. What was that? 6 hours or more?

This is a complete stretch and HERE'S YOUR LIFE is a far better suggestion considering we know Criterion have the rights.

Hmmm... I have never heard of Here's Your Life but if they have the rights to a film titled that I would guess that is correct.

However, Criterion has done multiple clues before that refer to more than one film. This is certainly a possibility as well. Considering Criterion has a good working relationship with Malick and have released several of his film's it's certainly not out of the question. However, maybe this should be moved to the wish-list section as it's not official yet.

The person presenting the tray has gloves on, suggesting they are a servant. What else would a servant be bringing breakfast on other than a tray?!

It could definitely be a hint for both films. Either way, Criterion has given a hint to the release and not a press release confirmation.

My biggest qualm about Tree of Life is simply...why? Why have Criterion release it? There is no need for it to be released by Criterion. It already has a stunning release. Why would 20th Century Fox license this out to Criterion, just to take away sales from their own release?

It also doesn't help that I hated Tree of Life. So maybe my pessimism is due to a bias.

MifuneFan will burn for this if he's wrong.

...there's a special place in hell reserved for those who misinform about Criterion releases.
