I was about to go there that night, but I had to go to a coworkers farewell happy hour... so I went there the next day and they said that there was NO WAY
..

Apparently, they only did it for one day till 6pm. Crazy.

Best Buy quitting the 80GB PS3?

Posted Jan 24th 2008 1:01PM by Paul Miller
Filed under: Gaming

According to a leaked internal Best Buy memo picked up by the fine folks at PS3 Fanboy, the 80GB SKU is going the way of... well, of every PS3 model that came before it. If the report is true, this means Best Buy will only have the 40GB PS3 on offer, and zero PS3s with any sort of PS2 backwards compatibility -- just like all of Japan. There's obviously no indication at this point if this has anything to do with the upcoming white PS3, or the vague -- and Sony discounted -- rumors of a $299 PS3 model, but we'll be keeping our eyes open.

PS2 backwards compatibility on the 80GB was a selling point. If the 80GB is discontinued, you are likely to see a firmware update for the 40GB allowing PS2 games.

Well, if true, it's going to put some pressure on 360. I will be definitely buying one if it's at $299.

This makes PERFECT sense as the 40gig PS3 is based on .65nm technology while the 80gig PS3 is based on .90nm therefore costing Sony a lot more to produce. Sony is working on using .45nm before the end of the year and I bet we see a backwards compatible model @ 399$ and a non-backward compatible model @ 299$ once they start using .45nm.

If that's true, I'm really glad I got my 80 gig PS3 back in August when it first came out in the States. Then again, if the firmware update does allow the 40 Gig to play PS2 games and you buy yourself a larger harddrive then $299 is a good deal. Sure... I've only used like 5 gigs of my harddrive so far but I like knowing that I won't run out of room any time soon.

Hmm, that would be a pretty big firmware update if they are going to enable software emulation on the 40G model. I wonder if that's possible with the hardware they used for the 40G model.

Not according to all previous reports... since the cutting of backward compatibility is related to cost cutting = there is hardware missing for this to be possible... even the emulation backward compatibility requires certain hardware attributes which are seemingly missing from the 40gig version of the PS3 (there would be NO valid reason for witholding backward compatibility if it was only a firmware update away).

I always thought that having two models was a good idea because it gave the consumer a choice in what they wanted. I guess we will have towait in see what happens.

I tell you one thing. If Sony does actually introduce a $299 model and couple this with Blu-ray domination, the PS3 will sell like hotcakes. Never mind overtaking the xbox360 in 2009. The PS3 will overtake xbox360 at the end of 2008 with that price.

Alas, $100 price cut is too good to be true at this early stage. If there is a imminent price change, it will probably be $349.

Well the 80gb model was already running SW emulation for the emotion engine (ps2 cpu) what was left then was emulating the ps2 gpu which has its difficulties but is still very possible. One of the reasons sighted by Sony as to why they left off emulation on the 40gb was the cost of royalties/licensing for the sw emulator (they have 3rd party devs working on the emulator), if this is true then they could allow these devs to sell the emulator on the PSN for $10-15 to the 40gb owners. If they could hit even 10% of those owners you'd be looking at around 5-10 mil units which would certainly be worth it to the devs and would still be a bargain for the 40gb owners who want it.
