Can anyone here recommend a Sony receiver and possibly a speaker set-up?
I have a Sony HDTV and would like a Sony receiver to take advantage of the Bravia sync. So it would need to be a receiver with Bravia sync ability. Thanks! |

Onkyos are fine, indeed. For me, I got a good deal on a Sony STR-DA5300ES. It has 6 HDMI-in (HDMI 1.3a) and a 5-year warranty. So far, it's been a fine piece of gear. No overheating problems, and no audio sync problems that some other receivers are having.
Check out the ES line... But definitely check out Onkyo (and Yamaha, IMHO) as well. Mark ![]() |

Exactly. And don't fall for those Bravia sync and other gimmicks - it is just a way to get you to buy their other components. You would be much better off purchasing the best receiver you can for the money, regardless of brand, and then getting a univ remote.

I would agree that Sony Speakers are probably not a good idea.
But Sony receivers (especially the ES line) are very high quality. I have the 910 and it was by far the best value in its price/features class. It has bravia sync. 3 hdmi inputs, and HDMI transcoding, accepts 7.1 PCM, not to mention the ease of using 1 remote for your tv/receiver without having to buy a harmony remote. Its a perfect complement to a PS3 as it takes advantage of all the PS3's features without having to pay for features you will never use (such as with the newer onkyos: the Ps3 doesnt bitstream so theres no need to have a receiver that can decode DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD) |

I have the Sony STR-DG710 and use the switching for my cablebox and a PS3. So far, I cannot complain. It's not the best receiver in the world but, but for less than $300, it does a pretty good job. To me, the speakers are where you need to get the most bang you can afford. I bought Polk RTi8 for left and right and a Polk CS-1 center and a kenwood subwoofer I had from a previous setup. I don't even need surround sound speakers because this setup fills the room with sound. If you can afford it, get the 910 instead, but spend money on the speakers.

Another great speaker setup is the Klipsch Quintet III. This 5 speaker set lists for $500, but Best Buy has run it on sale twice recently for $300. When they run the sale, they usually run the $400 10" sub for $250 at the same time.

I just think there are better quality receivers for your money that offer great sound and build quality compared to Sony. Sony is great at video, although they are overpriced, but with audio, I think there are just so many other better options. |

I have had my Sony 900 series for 8 years now and it still works great, but I plan on getting the 4300ES. The new ES is pretty nice and I think fully comperable to the nicer receivers out there.
I do have to agree about the speakers though... |

This is what I have and I cannot say enough about how advanced this unit is. I got it for $1035.00 and it is worth every penny. The automatic set-up with the microphone to balance out your system is amazing and makes you realize just how much better home theater is than a regular movie theater when it is properly balance!!

Most of you here who are bashing Sony receivers are doing so on the past.
The current line-up of Sony ES receivers is excellent. I would look carefully at the DA4300ES and if money is no object, the DA5300ES. Great specs and options along with a five year factory warranty. I would also look at Denon/Yamaha/Pioneer/Onkyo before making a final decision. Whatever you get, make sure it supports the latest audio specs....Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA. Stay away from speakers made by Sony/Pioneer/Onkyo/etc.........go with a real speaker manufacturer. |
