Anyone know why the new edition has the high price tag, even on Amazon?

I ordered it because Criterion would not respond to my e-mails, so it should be in today. I'll post pictures when it arrives.

Why would you do that when you already own the first release?

Well, Criterion wouldn't respond to my e-mails about the release so I figured I would take one for the team and share the news about what it exactly is.

I don't plan on opening it. I'll just return it tomorrow or something lol.

AFAIK it's just a re-issue in a standard case instead of the original digipak. Criterion has done that in several instances.

I don't think they've done a reissue for any of their thicker digipak releases, which TNotH is one. They've done them for the old thin ones like The Third Man, but I can't recall seeing one for one of the bigger ones. The only related one I can think of is Breathless (which is still a little flimsier than other thicker digipaks), which was an upgrade to a dual-format release. Please correct me if I'm overlooking any.

Criterion has only done reissues for the following due to them being originally packaged in paper cases with a slipcover.

-The 400 Blows
-Bottle Rocket
-Chungking Express
-The Last Emperor
-The Last Metro
-Last Year At Marienbad
-The Man Who Fell To Earth
-El Norte
-The Third Man

The only reissues Criterion has done due to a dual-format release are The 400 Blows and Breathless.

I don't recall any other instances.

Would be thrilled to repurchase this if it were a standard case.

They've re-issued some of their Digipak DVDs in plastic cases: DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE and, most recently, THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (in those two cases the booklets were cut down for the re-release.)

The only reason that NIGHT OF THE HUNTER Blu-ray was a digi was because they didn't have a 2-disc Blu-ray Scanavo cases when released the film (the DVD of NIGHT came in a plastic case.)

I still have those original cases. The Marienbad digipak was much too snug for the film and book. I would've sold them but I doubt they have any value (except maybe The Third Man).

Ditto. I have several of them stored somewhere.

Like you, I don't see any value in them.

Thanks for the photos iScottie!

I actually never opened my copy of the original release since, shortly after buying it, I read all of the complaints about its flimsy packaging.

I'm going to list my copy on Amazon and buy the plastic case release when B&N's 50% sale rolls around in July.

If anyone's thinking of selling, I'm really dying for the non-digipak of The Man Who Fell to Earth. Kicking myself for looking at "packaging only" sale item on Criterion.com so many times and thinking, "Next week."
