I just watched the abyss bd for first time on my new oled and oppo 203 and it was framed really odd, 65 inch screen, but only using center 48 or so inches, so i actually used zoom on it 2 nights back. It did a really good job at it. And while oppo price is steep, its worth it.

Yeah that's how it is with the DVD, now just imagine what it was like on my very first 28" widescreen CRT Lol.
Certainly can't wait for this to finally arrive on Blu-ray.

Some players automatically made The Abyss and True Lies look "right," like my old Sony S5100. Not sure if the X800 does that too or not.

Sadly it seems as if the X800 is lacking that auto 'fake anamorphic' mode with non-anamorphic DVDs. That said I can't play my region 1 DVDs on mine so could you check it out with your X800, presuming you've still got the Abyss?

Oh right, I think you asked me that before. Yeah I own it and True Lies, on the shelf with everything else still! I'll try and remember to check it when I watch a movie later.

Tested Abyss and the X800 automatically makes it look right as well. Looks like ass though, like damn. I remember you and I said it was surprisingly watchable a few years ago but on the new 4k set it looks pretty nasty.

Yep, the 4k abyss needs to happen ASAP as the dvd is nearly unwatchable on a 65 inch 4k. I mean it never looked good, even on my old 55 inch 1080. but jeez, i feel like im watching a Russian Cam torrent now its so bad.

This is a proper 16:9 anamorphic transfer admittedly, but here's the 2003 'Extreme Edition' DVD of T2 playing on my ZD9 via the X800, and it ain't so bad:

Oh DVDs in general look fine, probably better than on my old TV/player combo. I was watching a lot of Star Trek Voyager the last month or so and it looked fine. The Abyss just looks pretty damn rough, I assume because it's non-anamorphic. I'll toss in True Lies later if I remember. Thankfully I finally replaced Bird on a Wire's non-anamorphic DVD with the UK blu.

True Lies' non-ana trnsfer will look even worse than the Abyss, that was a bad transfer at the time never mind now.

The oppo 203 does, as stated above. Has like 5 diff zoom options you can toggle through via button on the remote.

So, I should watch the Abyss DVD on a strip about 3 inches wide? I Dont think so! I think its my right to watch something however I want...Dont get me started on black bars though. In my opinion, it is stupid to have black bars on a TV display! Its a WASTE of space. PLUS, when I watch something with black bars, its distracting and gives me a headache.

Of course my TV has a ZOOM feature, BUT in 4K, it disallows it. SO STUPID. So, it will allow me to zoom on a DVD or regular Blu-Ray, BUT not 4K...

Thus I need an affordable 4K blu-ray player with Zoom on it.

So your options are:

1. Buy the oppo for double your price goal

2. Live with letterbox for movies the director intended to be that way

3. Sacrifice having the feature on the remote and for movies you need to bastardize (i kid), use the menu settings page on a more affordable player.

4. Wait, and hope a cheaper model possibly arrives with zoom on remote.
