Default DTS Master, Dolby TRUE HD, PCM

I have just bought the new onkyo 605 receiver with DTS-HD DOlby TRUE HD and HDMI 1.3. I am using my HD DVD player and PS3, via the HDMI cables. How do I get the receiver to decode DTS-HD, TRUE HD and PCM 5.1/7.1? Any particular settings on the HD DVD or PS3 that i should know about? I have noticed several options for HDMI sound-out, PCM, bitstream on PS3. Also, assuming i set things up correctly, should my receiver display "DTS-HD Master Audio, or DOLBY TRUE HD" on the LCD display panel? Are there any other options for sound-out i should be aware of or be looking out for?

Thanks

I"m not totally sure, but on the hdmi settings, set it to bitstream if u want the reciever to decode it? Try that anyways, and ur display on the reciever should tell u that it's decoding it

I know that on a regular DVD if they offer Dolby Digital 5.1 and they offer DTS ES 6.1 Discrete(Or similar), your DVD player will normally choose the Dolby Digital as a default. Throw in a movie, when it gets to the screen that offers "Play, Setup, Scene Selection, etc..." You need to go to either "Language" or "Setup" and choose "DTS" and then play video and then you will see the "DTS" logo on your receiver light up! I'd imagine same goes for the blu-rays. Go to the Blu-ray Disc's setup and change it there.

Default DTS Master, Dolby True HD, PCM

For PS3: It can decode Dolby TrueHD and send it to your onkyo over HDMI as PCM. You need to go under DVD/BD settings on the PS3 and change HDMI audio output to linear PCM. The onkyo will not display Dolby TrueHD in this set up because PS3 has already decoded it into linear PCM, but you will still hear Dolby TrueHD in all its glory! For any blu-ray discs encoded in uncompressed PCM just make sure the DVD/BD setting is set to linear PCM over HDMI on the PS3 as described above. The PS3 will not decode full DTS-HD Master audio, only the "core" DTS signal. Sony has never stated that PS3 will output DTS-HD master as a bitstream to a new receiver with HDMI 1.3 and onboard DTS-HD master decoders (like your new onkyo). Please set the PS3 to bitstream under DVD/BD HDMI audio output and see if your onkyo displays DTS-HD master. That would be awesome! Please let us all know!

Default Note on HD DVD

For HD DVD: no player currently available will decode full DTS-HD Master audio (panny blu-ray does DTS-HD high resolution), however, I am not aware of any player that will output full DTS-HD master bitstream over HDMI 1.3. My suggestion: set your audio output on the HD DVD player to bitstream and see if the onkyo displays DTS-HD Master in the window. Let us know if you get it to work, good luck!

Default HD Audio Question

I'm rather new to HD Audio Video, although I have an AV gear that's relatively old. I'm currently using a Sony Bravia KLV-32A300V LCD TV hooked up to Denon AVR 3200 receiver and PS3 as blu-ray player. My speaker set-up consists of Mordaunt-Short front and center speakers, Bose surrounds and AR subwoofer. I'm planning to upgrade my 10 year old receiver to an Onkyo 605 or budget permitting, a 705. Assuming that I bought either one and hook it up via HDMI v.1.3a, will it be possible to hear Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio using only 5.1 speakers?

yes....alot of the movies that are out now dont take advantige of 7.1 sound anyway, and even if they did you would still be able to here it. I currently only have a 3.0 setup and i listen to trueHD and uncompressed pcm, just not in 5.1 surround.

currently, the PS3 cannot send lossless compressed audio via bitstream. set the audio output to linear PCM and the game console will send, to the receiver, the entire Dolby TrueHD track and only the DTS core track of DTS-HD Master Audio.

Setting the PS3 to Bitstream and sending a DTS-MA track to the 605 via HDMI still only does the core DTS 5.1 track, unfortunately. Believe me, it's the first thing I check whenever a new PS3 firmware update comes out. I have yet to hear a full blown DTS-MA track, but I hear it's bad ass compared to TrueHD. Frankly, I prefer the uncompressed PCM over TrueHD in almost every instance and have the same setup as the OP.

I think people perceive TrueHD a lower because of the volume difference. TrueHD is a couple of DB less than PCM. But once volume matched they are the same. + When you decode TrueHD inside a AVR with bitstream. The Receiver boost the BD and it is louder than PCM.. LOL

DTS CORE is also louder than DD, but not necessarely better. 24bits of DTS can be better at reproducing music once Leveled out with DD. DTS HD MA is also louder than TruehD once decoded by the Receiver. Once again that is perceived as better while it's may or not once leveled out

Thanks for the info. I am definitely no audio expert, but the reason I prefer the PCM when comparing is because the clarity I get from rear channels I don't typically hear. This probably is a volume issue, and I've never bothered tweaking a TrueHD track because the few discs I have with it also contain uncompressed PCM.

Is DTS HD the same as Mater audio? I am looking at getting a new player and some of them just say DTS HD and not Mater Audio.

Default Need DTS Master Audio analog out from a BR player

There are a few of us like me who do not use receivers to decode or work with audio from our Blu-ray players. I am not about to replace my Mcintosh Mc 602 power amp with a receiver. Guess we will have to wait for a player which outputs the analog decoded audio for our audiophile equipment.

Alot of CEs are using them as the same but they are not. DTS HD has two formats under it. HR lossy and MA lossless. I also think that some CEs are doing this on purpose so that we are confused as consumers. You see DTS HD and think you are gerring what you want.

But if you are looking for a player that will bitstream DTS HD MA you have 3 choices right now and one on it way real soon.

Samsung 1400
Panasonic 30
Pioneer 95.
Denon 2500(due out in a few weeks)

There are more that have been annouced that will decode and send via analog or HMDI.

Denon 3800(should be first to market early next month)
Panasonic 50
Pioneer 05

Question

I am thinking of upgrading to the Onkyo 705. Is it worth it using only the PS3 as my audio source? I have read that it only sends out the new audio formats as PCM. I have an older reciever that has no HDMI and wonder if it would be worth the money, or should I upgrade to a stand alone BD player as well? Because if the reciever will not be processing the audio from the PS3 maybe I should just get a stand alone player with multichannel outs and keep using the receiver I have? What would be my best option??

PCM thru HDMI from the PS3 sounds excellent. The 705 is excellent, the 805 even better if you can swing it.
