Emma Thompson to Star in Brian Kirk Action Thriller ‘The Fisherwoman’

Emma Thompson is set to star in Brian Kirk’s upcoming action thriller “The Fisherwoman,” Variety can exclusively reveal.

In the feature, Thompson is set to play a widowed fisherman who, while trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard, interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager and soon finds she is the young victim’s only hope.

Kirk will direct from a screenplay by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, who have just been tapped to write the “Hot Wheels” movie for Warner Bros and Bad Robot. The duo are also currently working on “The Fall” for Amblin and Blackmaled Productions

Kirk is the co-creator and director of Idris Elba series “Luther” and has directed for series including “Game of Thrones,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Penny Dreadful,” among others. “The Fisherwoman” will be his first feature since “21 Bridges,” one of the last films Chadwick Boseman made before he died in 2020.

“Dame Emma Thompson is a phenomenally talented artist and the perfect incarnation of our film’s titular character,” said Jon Berg, president of production at Stampede Ventures. “We couldn’t be more honored and excited to see her embody a character that shares her unique strength, grit and intelligence.”

Filming for the movie reportedly wrapped in June

In February 2024, it was announced that an action-thriller film titled The Fisherwoman was in development with Brian Kirk directing and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb writing the screenplay. Laurel Marsden, Emma Thompson and Judy Greer were cast in the lead roles, alongside Gaia Wise and Marc Menchaca. Principal photography began on February 26, in Koli, Finland and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In Finland, Thompson praised the skills of the local working crew, even writing a laudatory letter dedicated to the Finns, published by Helsingin Sanomat. Because of this, the Finnish president Alexander Stubb personally called Thompson and thanked the actress "for her beautiful words, trust in Finns and welcomed her back to Finland". Filming wrapped in June 2024.

‘The Dead Of Winter’ To Debut At Locarno, Emma Thompson To Be Feted At Swiss Fest

Emma Thompson will receive the Leopard Club Award at this year’s Locarno Film Festival, where her latest flick, The Dead Of Winter, will debut.

From director Brian Kirk, the film follows a widowed fisherwoman (Thompson) trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard who interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager only to realize that she is the young victim’s only hope. It is Kirk’s follow-up to 2019’s 21 Bridges.

Also starring are Laurel Marsden, Judy Greer, Gaia Wise, Lloyd Hutchinson, and Brían F. O’Byrne. Screenplay is by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb. Vertical has taken North American rights on the flick.

Thomas will attend Locarno in person to introduce The Dead Of Winter and pick up her Leopard Club award.
