Thumbs up

I love a good slasher movie and this one looked surprisingly decent for a straight to VOD release. Thankfully it's better than decent and actually legit good. It's what last fall's Hellfest should have been. I did actually like Hellfest but this is better. It certainly delivers on the gore that was missing from that film. It's just a shame that flopping is likely the reason this didn't get a theatrical release because it is worthy of one. I would have enjoyed seeing this on the big screen.

Anyway, Katie Stevens (TV's The Bold Type) is a good and likable lead. I actually cared about her fate. The movie itself has plenty of tense moments. If you're looking for a good horror flick this Halloween season Haunt is a treat.

I loved this as well, and agree it was everything Hell Fest should have been.

DVD on October 15th, no blu-ray.
It will also be on SHUDDER on October 24th.

What a bummer there's no Blu-ray. I do have Shudder though so at least I'll be able to watch it on there.

Will a Blu-Ray release eventually happen?

I can’t stand the whole “knock-the-villain-down-but-instead-of-finishing-him-off-let’s-just-run-away-before-he-gets-back-up” trope anymore. I understand it’s a fixture of the genre to prolong the duration but I can’t jive with it anymore; it immediately kills the movie’s prospects and any sympathy I might’ve had for the characters. If you can overlook this I think there’s fun to be had with this, but it just frustrated me.

Universal seems to be steering away from blu-rays for some of their smaller titles. Wild Rose, Luce, Family, Being Frank, etc.

Go figure, they're typically the ones I'd actually want to own.

Well, here's the thing with that. Unless you are a cop, military/special forces or something like that, you are going to flee for safety and let the pros deal with it. It's something they teach in self defense classes. You are not trying to win a Heavyweight championship.
The trope where one thinks they're some kind of badass drives me nuts.
I mean honestly? Is anyone here seriously go mono y mono with Jason Voorhies?

I'm assuming you haven't seen the movie yet but there are several times where the main characters have the upper hand and have hurt/damaged/knocked down the assailant but instead of permanently incapacitating them (not necessarily killing them but enough so that they won't continue the pursuit) they just run away to allow the assailant to regain his strength/consciousness in order to continue the chase.

Btw, these guys aren't supernatural like Jason Voorhees, with those guys/franchises I say yes, GTFO.

I was referring solely to the trope itself.

That's very disappointing to hear.

I can remember when blu ray first came out. So much optimism and excitement. Then streaming had to come along and f**k everything up.

It's a case-by-case situation with this particular trope, but 90% of the time I see no valid reason to just run away once you have the advantage, I'll say that.

Agreed. With the supernatural villains don't bother but if you have the chance to kill a bad guy that's a regular person and don't it pisses me off. If you run them over with your car keep doing it. If they're knocked out unconscious you finish them. It's annoying when a character knocks them out and then just throws the weapon down and runs off. But I'm so used to it that it won't actually ruin a movie for me.

That is good to hear. I liked Hell Fest, but felt it could have been better.

I am very interested in seeing this one now.

I wish I could turn off “that” portion of my brain during a horror movie but the sensible version of me always wins, but I honestly think that’s what separates the good written horror movies from the bad/lazy written ones.
