That is a really good cast. Hopefully it does not turn into the usual Netflix crap.

Not sure if I will like this or not. The home they are living in isn't what I thought it would look like

Saw it Monday at the "Silver Screen" showing with my mum - she gets free coffee and cake! It was in the largest screen at Stratford-upon-Avon and there wasn't a spare seat in the house. I was the youngest in there by a fair bit!
I wasn't sure if they'd make it a bit overly twee for international audiences but I think they got the tone just about right. In some ways it's like a mega-budget version of something like Midsomer Murders with an all-star cast but it definitely felt more like a "proper" film in comparison to some of the dross Netflix regularly churns out. I read the book a few years ago but I don't think they jettisoned too much. I was expecting the subplot with [Show spoiler] to have been explored a lot more and [Show spoiler] but no major liberties were taken overall. [Show spoiler] I think the audience all pretty much enjoyed it. It's certainly a cosy ride. My mum's main issue with it was that she felt one of the cakes Joyce gives to DCI Hudson was "quite clearly *not* a drizzle cake!" ![]() |

I haven't read the book, but I enjoyed this. It does feel like a feature-length episode of a Sunday night TV mystery rather than a cinematic experience, but it has a great cast of familiar faces, a number of laughs, & is generally well made.
I'd happily watch another episode if they decide to do the rest of the books & keep this cast. A couple of minor niggles: 1. [Show spoiler] 2. Whoever did the lighting for Celia Imrie's lounge needs to go back to film school. It looked so much like the set of a bad sitcom I honestly expected Mrs. Brown & her boys to walk in at any moment. 3. The resolution to the murder was a bit underwhelming, & [Show spoiler] Overall though, an easy 7/10. Good, cosy fun. Best enjoyed with a nice hot drink & some choccy biscuits. ![]() I'm sure if it got a longer cinema run it'd make a mint with the 'Grey Pound/Silver Screen' crowd. |

I've never read the books but this film was extremely pedestrian. It looked and felt very flat and the starlined cast can't save it when their dialogue is so basic and dull.
I'm sure it'll do very well on Netflix and they're warming up the engines for a sequel. |
