I would give a 4.5 out of 5 for Image Quality. Looks great. Better than I was expecting.
I watched last night. The review on this site says the odd speckle and pop remain but nothing distracting -- And I have to say "what?" I watched The film closely for the entire 109 minutes and did not see a speck of dirt nor hear a pop. Looks very good. Likely only recent Warner Brothers Blu-ray releases of 3-color Technicolor films look ever so slightly better. This is really good. I so wanted an extra to tell me more about this production. I just watched this and it's like a B movie version of Gone With The Wind but it was still really good.
The picture was amazing, the colors just popped out. Richard Long from The Big Valley and Nanny and the Professor. Julie London, wow she's so young. Yet to be a singing star. I really only remember Van Heflin from Shane playing a much more subdued role. But in Tap Roots he's like Errol Flynn or even Clark Gable I guess, to continue in that Gone With The Wind influence since he has the mustache. Very tough and a bit roguish. Susan Hayward could have been Vivian Leigh's sister. She was really great. This film isn't for everyone and it's not a classic but it would have been a great Saturday matinee, it's one of those kinds of films. It was a blind buy but totally worth it and as I've written it looks amazing. I'm very surprised Universal released this on bluray. I'm wondering who was asking for this film. There's only four posts on this thread so even our forum members weren't that excited. Look at the amount of posts Bringing Up Baby has gotten versus this film and yet Universal still deemed it needed a bluray release. It's just such an odd catalog release.
