Default What are your favorite uses of popular songs within a movie?

Not talking about the soundtrack, but where a song is heard by the characters.

Two of my favorite examples are (of course) "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen within Shaun of the Dead.

Another favorite of mine is the "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood hypnotizing scene in Zoolander.

What are some other examples?

The short film 'Scorpio Rising' has my favorite sound track of any film. It turned me on to a number of cool songs of the early 60s.

"The Power of Love" is heard in all the Back to the Future movies. During the first film, Marty and his band The Pinheads attempt a rougher rock-sounding version of it, which impresses Jennifer Parker. During the 2015 segment of the second film, the 47-year-old Marty tries playing it by himself, but it sounds awful and even Jennifer notices this, due to his broken hand. Near the end of the third film, the song is heard on the radio in Needles' truck.

There's also that great nightclub scene in Body Double which I believe Relax was actually written for.

Tiny Dancer in the bus scene from Almost Famous.

Does I Still Believe by Tim Capello in The Lost Boys count? It's being performed by a band and I'm not sure how popular it is. It's popular in my house.

One Vision in Iron Eagle.

Many moments in Mean Streets and GoodFellas where they're in bars and nightclubs and cars and places, with awesome songs playing from jukeboxes/radios or being sung on stage. Ditto that bar in After Hours.

The above mentioned Reservoir Dogs scene, plus the twist contest in Pulp Fiction and Uma at home with "Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon". Max Cherry driving around to the Chi-Lites while thinking about Jackie Brown.

In fact, Scorsese and Tarantino are pretty well masters of this kind of thing.

One of the all-time champs, though, is George Lucas with American Graffiti.

Do You See What I See? by Johnny Mathis in Gremlins.

I don't know if it is on my list of favourite uses in a movie. But every time I hear Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donavan I think about Zodiac and my blood runs a bit cold.
