Sony Pictures Planning Jumanji Reboot

The Hollywood Reporter has posted an interview with Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad in which he reveals some interesting bits about what the studio is working on for the future.

He then dropped a surprise, saying that the studio is looking to reboot 1995's Jumanji, which was directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America) and starred Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce. "We're going to try and reimagine Jumanji and update it for the present."

The original was very good and all the actors meshed together perfectly, I don't know if they could duplicate that kind of success. The movie will more than likely be shot in 3D which means that the studio will focus more on the money they will make off of the 3D ticket sales than actually putting out a good movie.

I really enjoy the original but I've wondered on several occasions how it would look with modern effects. I guess we're going to find out. I did really like the original cast though and as noted I think they will be hard to replace. I just hope they don't lose the story in the effects if they proceed with this.

or the first interactive movie. The crowd plays the game? Everyone in the audience gets a device that lets them roll a number. And that number most people rolled is what will be played. And each spot on the board is something different. Imagine the revisits to the theater. What would happen if we didn't go 6 steps, and went 3?

Sony Pictures Dates 16 Films Through 2019!

Sony Pictures has dated 16 films, including two more Bad Boys sequels

Sony Pictures Entertainment today unveiled release dates for 16 films for the studio’s slate through 2019.

The additions compose a diverse, globally oriented mix of films, including new films with franchise potential (The Dark Tower, Uncharted, Patient Zero), established franchises (Bad Boys 3 and 4, Resident Evil, Underworld), adaptations of strong and beloved source material (The Magnificent Seven, Jumanji, Barbie), and daring original films (Passengers, Money Monster, The Shallows, Baby Driver, The Lamb).

These films join numerous projects already on the studio’s slate, including Ghostbusters (which moves up one week to 7/15/16), the next Spider-Man film (7/28/17), The Equalizer 2 (9/29/17), Dan Brown’s Inferno (10/14/16), Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (11/11/16), and the animated Spider-Man film masterminded by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (7/20/18).

The full list of films and their release dates added to the slate includes:

This is actually one reboot I could see working as they could take the board game concept in any number of directions. Does that mean it will be good? No, but it has potential.

I hope they just do a sequel. Different people find the game somewhere, chaos ensues.

The original is one of Robin's greatest performances. I know that may sound bold, but Jumanji showed just how likable the man was at his best.

For the fact that the first film holds up so well today makes me think a standard sequel with different characters that discover the game would be more sensible. It would be modernised and have no ties anyway, so rebooting it instead of having Jumanji 2 is a bit pointless.

The Jumanji remake is getting rewritten by the guys behind Gone in 60 Seconds and Lost

The Jumanji remake is getting rewritten - but it's still on track to land next Christmas.

Deadline reports that Scott Rosenberg (Con Air and Gone in 60 Seconds) has been hired by Columbia PIctures to rework what has already been developed for producers Matt Tolmach and Bill Teitler.

The film will apparently be a new version of Chris Van Allsburg's 1985 book about the board game that comes to life and wreaks havoc on the players' lives.

Rosenberg's co-writer on the TV series Zoo, Jeff Pinkner (Alias, Lost and Fringe), is also understood to be working alongside him in a consulting capacity.

The original Jumanji was released in 1995 and directed by Joe Johnston.

Robin Williams starred as Alan Parrish, the grown-up version of a young boy sucked into the board game, before returning 26 years later. Kirsten Dunst and Bonnie Hunt co-starred.

Jumanji's remake is due for release December 25, 2016.
