I guess they decided to turn that Disney+ series into a feature film instead.

Apparently they’ve repurposed the Disney Plus series into a feature film. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Even stranger to do this in addition to a live-action remake of the original that is being made soon.

What do you mean? I've heard people give similar complaints about the other way around, with movies being turned into series, like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

He's had his misses lately, but to me a sequel only works if you're bringing back The Rock as Maui, Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, and you have Lin-Manuel Miranda writing the songs. You need all 3 for the sequel to work properly imo.

Hollywood Reporter says all 3 are returning.

It's weird how people are complaining that this exists, on just the merit of it being a sequel. Well, if only more people went to see Strange World and Wish!

Now let's see if all these sequels will bring back the Disney buck$.

Actually looks like Miranda isn't returning, and that's a rather large blow imo.

I have no problem with them doing this. The ending of the first film perfectly set up a sequel if they wanted to do one. As opposed to Inside Out 2 which is completely unnecessary.

Just let Pua go on the adventure this time. My son loves pigs and I remember him being really disappointed when he was left behind in favor of Hei Hei(especially with him shown on the damn raft in the poster).

I love Moana, but the fact that this was just randomly announced out of the blue as a result of repurposing a Disney+ show doesn’t fill me with confidence. (anybody remember the DTV sequels that did this, like Atlantis: Milo’s Return? *shudder* or the DTV sequels that were “promoted” to theatrical like Jungle Book 2?) They’re also doing a live action remake of this already, along with Frozen and Zootopia sequels.

What’s not to get? This was made as a lower-budgeted tv series that they’re now repurposing as a theatrical film after the fact, most likely as a response to their recent financial losses. It comes off as a cheap. This was a story that was written as episodic instalments and was meant for the small screen.

I wouldn't say it's unnecessary. The red "puberty" button at the end of the first one pretty much set it up. There was always room for us to see Riley to grow up, and we could see new emotions come into play while she's going through puberty.

The teaser certainly doesn't LOOK low-budget.

Ok, let's not blame the audience for their failure. A Moana 2 is fine. Inside Out 2? Eh... Zootopia 2? Long time coming. Frozen 3? Again, eh. Toy Story 5? Bro, even 4, as entertaining as it is, was unnecessary. 3 wrapped it up perfectly.

IIRC this is being outsourced to Disney Animation's recently opened Vancouver studio

Definitely has that “break glass in case of emergency” feel to it.

So? Don't go blaming Disney for doing this. It's not their fault that audiences didn't go in droves to see their movies last year.
