Shooter 4k blu-ray remastered would be ideal

This Shooter that was released on July 31st 2007 uses the legacy MPEG-2 codec with lossy audio. Even the 2013 and 2018 re-release did the same. This would be a ideal movie to get a improved 4K Blu-ray HEVC or standard Blu-ray using MPEG-4/AVC with lossless audio.

What is disappointing is that for many Paramount Pictures releases they end up using the old Blu-ray masters from 2006. The 20th Anniversary Edition of Sleepy Hollow that was released on 9-24-2019 uses the exact same single layer disc with lossy audio and MPEG-2. A re-release of a old title using a old master is better then nothing, but a lot of Paramount films are not getting modern lossless audio for the re-release.

Paramount’s Warriors is another example of the July 3rd 2007 lossy audio release master being used on the July 13th 2021 re-release. I could list dozens of more titles. But Paramount Pictures is choosing not to improve on the exiting 2006 and 2007 Blu-ray masters and re-relasing the Blu-rays using the old masters. A 4K Blu-ray or standard Blu-ray using lossless audio would be ideal. But maybe its not in the budget for some titles since streaming is becoming popular.

For some reason I decided to randomly check this 15 year old Blu-ray out to see how it was doing. While disc 2 plays perfectly fine, the 15 year old disc 1 has went bad and no longer plays like it did many years ago. The Paramount disc 1 is defective and must have had some defects in the manufacturing stamping process since it will not play in any brand or model of Blu-ray player anymore since the disc is unreadable. The disc surface is in perfect condition with no fingerprints, dust, or scratches. I ended up needing to buy a replacement now.

So Blu-ray’s if stamped incorrectly at the factory well not last over 1,000 years and will end up going bad after 15 years (but this is extremely rare and I never had this happen before to a Blu-ray disc in my collection). Once and awhile a DVD, audio CD, or Laserdisc optical disc can go bad. But there are some DVD's from 1997, audio CD's from 1983, and some Laserdiscs from 1978 that still work perfectly fine.

According to the database the disc that went bad was a dual layer BD-50 and the BD-25 is working fine. Back in 2006 50GB Blu-ray discs were very rare and most people were using 25GB discs, Paramount must have had issues with some 50GB discs from 2006 not lasting over 15 years, in theory the 2007 50GB titles and beyond did not have that issue. All it takes is stamping one bad disc out of 3,000+ for a title and maybe the other 2,999 work perfectly fine after 15 years.
