Never heard of the film, but Jesus, that trailer is terrible. Not exactly selling the New York Post's "funniest(!) movie of the year".

Not familiar with this one, but it looks SO 1996 that I may give it a watch just because of that.

If they're digging deep in their 90s vault i'd love to see Homegrown (1998). Criminally underrated.

Just got my copy from Amazon and I can't wait to watch this tonight.
I have been shouting into the void on Twitter since 2010, begging for Sony Classics to put this out and I just assumed they didn't have the rights to it anymore. It only ever had been on vhs and laserdisc, there wasn't even a dvd in America (although long out-of-print DVDs that from what I can tell were "full screen" existed in a few other countries). With LOVE & HUMAN REMAINS and WILDE coming out earlier this summer and CAUGHT just announced for September, it seems like SPC is going through the archives to get the things they happen to still hold rights to. Quite a few of the international films they released in the mid-90s have surfaced elsewhere in recent years, but I am hopeful this means we could still possibly see releases in recent months of: BEAUTIFUL THING SLC PUNK MUTE WITNESS MANNY & LO BROKEN ENGLISH THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS MY LIFE WITHOUT ME THE HOUSE OF MIRTH IN THE COMPANY OF MEN MA VIE EN ROSE THE OPPOSITE OF SEX CENTRAL STATION THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB and THIEVES |

I’m with you on many of these, but my god is Myth of Fingerprints unbearable. Bart Freundlich is a terrible filmmaker Another big one is The Dreamlife of Angels (Erick Zonka, 1998). Gorgeous looking film that was France’s Oscar submission but did not get shortlisted |

Watched it last night. This is totally bare bones - not even a menu - but, just like with BACK TO THE BEACH waiting so long to get an high def scan, the benefits to the long wait for fans are clear.
The transfer looks better than I ever could have hoped. I don't know if it was a 4K scan, but it looks sharp and colors are very nice. Having only ever seen this on vhs, I didn't really know what to expect. Upscaled on my Sony Bravia, it was a very pleasant viewing indeed. |

Worked on this when I was too young to be working on this (I lied about my age). Was my first paid gig in film, all interiors shot in a Manhattan mansion - as Daly shot his scenes upstairs, I screwed together a mock airplane seat for a (very tightly shot) scene of Caroleen Feeney on a flight, conversing (naturally, as the film is made up of telephone conversations, give or take a childbirth).
Recall it being a big deal Michael Mayers was shooting - he was coming off the success of Spanking the Monkey and would shoot some (imo) great, unsung, now-forgotten late 90s indies (including a few either starring or directed by Frank Whaley). And everyone loved Sylvia Miles, who was as much a card as she was in the film and in movies like Crossing Delancey. Dug it when I finally saw it at a Boston theater months later, and imagine, despite the technology, it would play all the more relevant today, as we live our entire lives virtually and/or via text/facetime (especially post-covid), from work to relationships to everything else. Liked the same director's 1997 follow up, His and Hers, but never got around to his last one, which came out a decade or so later - both of which star some of the same actors. Looking forward to seeing it again, when time allows. Here's a nicely staged "live" adaptation from 2000 aired on Greek television - the title translates to "You've Been Waiting...On Your Handset". It's sweet (even if I don't speak Greek). Have affection for most of these and still own Opposite, Manny and Myth on DVD - watched the latter every Thanksgivingtime for several years (all that dysfunctional suburban Gothic malaise), along with Jodie Foster's Home for the Holidays. Love the score as well, by John Phillips and David Bridie (it led me to his group, My Friend the Chocolate Cake). House of Mirth I sat through twice in a row at the movie theater (I loved it and had more time to waste in my youth), but haven't seen since. Last edited by hiraeth; 07-14-2025 at 03:07 AM. |
