It's a strange one, I rate The Witch, Hereditary and Midsommar all around the same (the edge obviously goes to Eggers for The Lighthouse).
But in terms of filmmaking they're quite polar opposites, Eggers prefers preciseness in his execution, his use of language needs to be period-accurate and rhythmic, and his shots are very clear in length and framing in regard to what he shows, and more importantly, what he doesn't. Whilst Aster's films are intentionally murkier and messier to reflect the subjects he tackles, veering rapidly between between psychological states and uninhabitable relationships. They both seem similarly mannered on paper, but Aster's films tend to sprawl in scope whilst Eggers introspects. This isn't to say one approach is better than the other, just that I feel Eggers has honed in on his craft whilst Aster is still finding that ideal balance. |

Since The Lighthouse is the only one I found interesting, Eggers, but I wouldn't call it being on team Eggers so much as I would be calling it being on team Dafoe.

Aster. I don't even like Eggers' movies.

It's close, I like them both, but being able to understand all the dialogue definitely counts for something. You have to be in a particular mood to (re)watch an Eggers film. Aster is more "accessible," his movies will get more replay, so that's my vote.

Went for Astar. The Witch is good and The Lighthouse is very good. While Hereditary is very good and Midsommar the best film of last year!

Both are pretty awesome, but I prefer Aster.
Both Hereditary and Midsommar really struck a chord with me and I think they hold up well. VVitch is something I find mildly interesting, but the pacing really loses me. Do love The Lighthouse though. Out of the four movies, I probably love Midsommar the most. |

Both are excellent but Eggers wins for me. He hits a particular nerve I have for period accurate settings and dialogue. Also he knows when to wrap it up while Aster takes a little too long for my liking.
Also Aster, as talented as I find him, strikes me as a sadist. He seems to delight in cruelty whereas Eggers is neutral on it. Rankings: The Witch/The Lighthouse. Hereditary. Midsommar. |

i was thinking of posting this exact same poll, but glad i searched first.
i broke the tie, voted for eggers' films. love all 4 films mentioned by both directors, but the witch and lighthouse are 2 of my absolute fave films release within the past 10 years. and my ranking would look like 1) witch 2) lighthouse 3) hereditary 4) midsommar (still excellent) |
