I've traveled with a suitcase full of BDs and it did nothing to them. They were wrapped with clothes though.

No, it doesn't. You will be fine.
Just think of x-ray as stronger lights. But just like you don't want to take sun tan or put something under direct sunlight for too long, you definitely don't want too much x-ray exposure. But x-rays they use in airport is in such a low dose, it will not effect anything. You will actually get exposed to radiation more from flying close to atmosphere than getting a chest x-ray. And clothing does nothing, x-ray will go through it like its not even there. It has to be under lead to be protected ( think Superman ![]() |

Yeah, as I understand it, with the exception of living tissue, X-Rays do not have an effect on anything you pass through it. All it does is shoot electrons at the material; whatever bounces back or passes through is captured to produce the image of what's inside a suitcase or parcel. I don't recall if X-Rays affect magnetic media (like VHS tapes), but optical discs, hard drives, flash memory, and electronics are unaffected.
I've gone through airports just recently with a bag load of CDs, DVDs, BDs, and all my gizmos, and none of them have had any problems. I even remember when I was a kid, I fretted about whether or not the airport X-Ray would effect an NES game, but it worked no problem. |

It depends on the X-ray machine used, newer (I.E. those from the last 10 to 15 years) do not damage magnetic media, optical, or film.
Some machines can still erase hard drives, iPods with hard drives, and ruin film. These still will not do harm to solid state drives (so SSDs and ipod Touches, Nanos, and Shuffles along with tablets/ereaders) and CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. These older machines will be labeled with a warning so you should not damage anything important. |
