![]() ![]() Cape Fear Blu-ray Cape Fear Blu-ray Review According to dvdempire looks like the Scorsese version of Cape Fear is coming October 18. Should be a great looking transfer, not only is Scorsese one of the best filmmakers ever but one of the industries foremost experts about film restoration. For me, this is a case where the original was far better than the remake. You can't beat the tension between Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. The film was tense, subtle and frightening. The remake pushed everything too hard and fell short because of it

This is one of the few remakes that actually stands up rather well to the original. However, the two films are very different.
This would make an excellent addition to any collection. |

It would seem like a no-brainer to release both movies the same day, or include the old one in a second disc as a great extra. But similar opportunities have been missed before so I won't hold my breath. |

![]() I'm just a huge fan of anything Mitchum does. The original doesn't have a lot of the detailed violence and perversion as the remake. Its understandable considering the time the original was made. Most everything is implied and not specifically shown, but Mitchum and Peck do a magnificant job and carry the movie. Add in some well crafted suspense and some beautiful black & white film noir cinematography and you have the very definition of a classic. Not to mention Bernard Hermann's haunting score. Huge fan of Hermann as well. |

Which is fully present in the remake (super smart move on Scorcese's part), so can't knock the '91 version (which I personally prefer specifically because it's more depraved and baroque and doesn't pull any punches--rare to see DeNiro do a "Pacino") for that.
