Default Record Store Day

Last Saturday was Record Store Day and was wondering if anyone scored the vinyl they were looking for.

I was able to snag this one, but sadly the pressing is pretty shitty

Here's the listing of all releases. Often times they don't sell out on the day of release, so check it out if you see anything you may want:

I got a few releases that I was looking for. Mary Lou Lord, Joss Stone, Joan Jett and Def Leppard.

Default I went to a particular shop for the first time...

but didn't care for the RSD releases on display, at least not for the prices. I did pick up this though:

There's one or two on the big RSD list that I may try to score, but I've dropped a little too much coin on records in the last week or two.

That sux that the pressing on your new LP is subpar. I was similarly disappointed months ago when I dropped the needle onto a fabulously packaged 50th Anniversary edition of Curtis Mayfield's solo debut. Everything about the release was perfect... except the most important part, the sound.

Sure did! Picked up the Gojira Live at Brixton Academy 2LP. Turns out I didn’t need to rush out that morning as it’s been pretty readily available.

Yeah, pretty pissed about it considering the price (ouch!). Expected better since it was a pretty limited run, but it was released by a French label I've never heard of. Also, the marbling looks nothing like on the obi - it's actually very pale white/green with very light green streaks. The other thing that irked me was the recording was a much later remix where Froese had added a bunch of other instrumentation and completely different mixing levels, not the original sourced recording at all.

You'd think that the labels republishing these recordings would have a higher level of standards considering the people purchasing these records are generally rabid fans or audio types. Got burned recently also on a Tom Petty 180gm rerelease of Damn the Torpedos which had skips on one side. Later learned it was a known issue with that particular release WTH!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I had no idea that Mary Lou Lord was releasing anything on Record Store Day. That led me to the fire records set which led me to discover that her major-label debut has been remastered and re-released on CD AND Vinyl. I am so stoked. I am going to see if I can order from my local record shop. if not, I will get it on the website as soon as I get paid. THANKS again. This has made my day.

As far as I know, there was one copy of her RSD exclusive in my city and I got it. Got No Shadow is amazing. Bought it without knowing anything about it and loved it.

Me too. It started my semi-lifelong love affair with her. Her next record was equally amazing. After that though, she sort of lost some of her mojo. Her last record just wasn't really amazing. But that's not faulting her or her talent in the least. Some of the most talented artists lose it along the way. R.E.M. is a great example. Though they made some excellent music after Berry left, they felt a bit rudderless. Not quite congealing enough for more than one or two albums. The heavier, more Rickenbacker-influenced songs on their final album really outstrip the others and sort of wish they could have trimmed some of the dead weight. Though there aren't many songs you can purge. But none of that takes away the amazing talent R.E.M. have and what a great group they were. They can't all be winners. In terms of albums anyway. And the same goes for Mary Lou Lord. Love her no matter what. Just waiting for her to floor me again.

I've been a huge R.E.M. fan especially their first two releases Murmur and Reckoning. Their completely oblique lyrics on the first release was brilliant and haunting in many ways. I think I read Michael Stipe say something to the effect that the earlier lyrics were derived from spontaneous ideas/imagery and phonetics than actual meanings. But yeah, they were never quite the same band after Bill Berry departed.

Due to a shoulder injury, she can't play the guitar now.

That is awful to hear. I can't imagine not being able to do something you love. I really am sorry to hear that about her.
