Default PS3 game regions

Hi, does anyone know exactly what's happening with the ps3 game regions. Before the PS3 was released there was all sorts of hype about games being region free, but now not one official source has been able to tell me that games are indeed region free. They all say the same thing, "we can't guarantee anything", I've gotten this response from ps3 customer support in the US, and in Singapore. And also is it true that there are really only 3 different regions for games and movies? because then games and movies meant for the US market can be played on Japanese and Singapore consoles, and vice versa.
Any information or clarification will be appreciated.

Shaun.

Acording to PSM3 they are region free but unless you have a HD/multitv (PAL, NTSC, SECAM) then they wont work very well with your tv.

Games are region free.
DVDs are still in the same six regions.
BDs are three, A (Americas, Japan and South East Asia), B (Europe, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand), C (the rest of the world).

Erm, apparently Sony have hinted to some of the more twitchy developers that they would be able to "bend the rules" for some games in particular. That is, games may or may not be region encoded on request. Fingers crossed they don't, its not like the rest of the world isn't already price gouged enough as it is.

Sorry guys, I tried looking has hard as I could but the article doesn't seem to be there. I think I found it on Kotaku, if that makes any difference.

I did however find an example of a particular title that has been region locked for the PS3, it is called "stranglehold". See kotaku and Midway forums for confirmation.

The news piece I was specifically referring to however mentioned sony's position of "flexability" on the whole region-free/region-locked issue, if specific publishes were hard set on the issue.

im pretty sure the SE was going to be region locked because it had the hard boiled the movie on it and it was going to be only released in NA so the fans kicked up a stink and im pretty sure they did'nt region code it.

As far as I know, the only game so far that's region locked is Rock Band. Released in US, not yet in Europe, and making it impossible to import.

Just because it is easy to import doesn't mean that you can't.

I wanna make like Adam and Jamie and call this myth of region-lock PS3 games busted.
