Picked up the DVD Queen Elizabeth in 3D, which was advertised as the first international Canadian broadcast in 3D. It apparently aired in 2010 as a celebration of the Queen. The main reason to get it is because Royal Review, the 3D short of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, was part of the broadcast. It's in anaglyph and doesn't look too bad as far as anaglyph goes. However, the broadcast is something of a disaster for me. For one, they don't show the short straight through. They keep interrupting it. For another, the host of the program keeps saying inane stuff over the short like "When you watch 3D, take all of it in" and "Look for the guy on the pole in a few seconds. He pops out at you." It almost makes its MST3K style.
Frankly, I'd like to see the original short as it was shown without the comments from the peanut gallery. |

This anaglyph presentation doesn't sound like something I'd particularly care to track down, but I'd welcome the original as an extra feature, were it to be remastered.
Obviously there's the very brief clip from Royal Review in the 3-D Movie trailer, on 3-D Rarities Volume 2. In that context, it made me think that so much of that 3-D, from the Golden Age and Silver Age all the way up to Avatar and digital 3D until very recently, could almost be considered part of a single era, were one to view it through the lens of monarchy. That's not how I prefer to look at things, but it served as a reminder that it's not such a long time ago really, and still within living memory, as much as we lose those connections to the past with each passing year. It's significant to have an historic event captured in 3-D for posterity. Too bad that isn't more common. I can't imagine the recent funeral was for example, (somehow that might not seem appropriate). Although I don't suppose upcoming coronation will be captured in 3D either. |

In theory, nothing. But can you imagine trying to make the argument for filming like that with people who don't care. It's just the reputation 3D has. Let's face it, there's not going to be much opportunity for pop-outs at a funeral. There are ways a situation like that could be handled 'tastefully', but that word is so often the kiss of death for 3D.
